I just thought I’d share with everyone my experience, which demonstrates our cars are adjusting oil change intervals based on use. I changed my oil at 9,874 miles two weeks ago, reset the oil life to 100%, and today at 10,174 it hit 0% oil life. That is a total of 300 miles driven.

Now, to put some context to that, it was 300 track miles at Barber Motorsports Park. I just found it interesting that it went to 0% so quickly after two days of track driving. I’ll take it the car is designed to know when it’s time, so it looks like I’ll be changing the oil after every track weekend. 😂

@krisk ...... we changed oil on cars we rallied and raced and our racing marine engines after every race. Ford and GM oil count downs used to be based on time. If they are now considering other data points like RPMs, shift points and temperatures that would be awesome and actually reflect the rigors of tracking/rallying/racing engines.

I've attached a few references on track time, oil life and the Oil Life Monitor:

- An explanation of the message flow between components

- From the Mach 1 Supplement, oil change after four hours of track time

- The S650 Owners Manual, printed page 439, lists the same interval

But yes, your track time confirmed it is based on time, driving duration, RPMs, temperatures, etc. At one extreme, a sitting car will count down 1.9% a week. You provide an example of the other end of the spectrum. My own experience shows same: the more spirited I drive the car, the counter ticks down at a faster rate.

PCM - Powertrain Control Module - Controls the engine and transmission
IPC - Instrument Panel Cluster - What the driver sees
GWM - GateWay Module - A switch, connecting the network segments
HS-CAN3 - High-Speed Controller Area Network, the third one (there are at four)
HS-CAN1 - One network segment of four, attached to yet other modules

Doesn't work that way. It was either time or you forgot to reset your oil life when you changed it.
It was most certainly at 100% when I changed the oil, because I reset it myself and checked it in the FordPass App as well. Oil life was at 50% after the first session of day 2. Day 2 it was dropping around 10% per 25 minute track session.

Thank you for sharing that section of the owners manual! I read the manual when I got my car, but didn’t read all the maintenance schedule info assuming it was all time based since I wasn’t tracking the car at the time. I looked at my manual it it says exactly what you shared. Looks like the axle fluid is getting changed as well. I have 6 track days since I changed the axle fluid, so it’s time.

It’s nice to know the computer is actually adjusting for real world use. It gave me the change oil notice on the last session of day 2 at around lap 10 of 15. I guess if I do a three day event I better plan on doing an oil change during it.

I found myself changing the engine oil after 2 weekend events, much easier to do on a S197 than the S650's. Changed the diff oil at beginning of race season and again half way through (8 month season). I'd change engine oils more often if weekends were hot and at big tracks, Road America, Pitt., would stock up on oil when on sale at Walmart. Interesting the 650's are so temperamental.

FWIW, I buy most of my oil through Amazon. Decent prices and delivered to my door. And, yes, in one instance, the bottle was damaged with a leak. Amazon was told, they just replaced the 5 quart bottle and told me to keep the broken bottle. Sounds reasonable. I bought my last Ford filter from Amazon as well. If doing this, look out for cheap Chinese knockoffs.

I'd search the internet for my specific oil filter, looking for best price and buy in bulk to save even more. Switched from the FL500S to FL1A

I bought two cases of Motorcraft full synthetic from RockAuto for less than $6 per quart plus around $20 total shipping cost. Not a bad price overall.

that's a good price, Walmart has them for around $10 qt. I used Mobil 1 in the race car, about $5 qt.
