Do not toss your jacked in the trunk without first removing the key fob from your jacket pocket.

Today, I tossed my jacket in the trunk without removing the key fob. Next, I touched the doorhandle thinking that I could unlock my vehicle. Nothing happened. Finally, I tried touching the sensor to open the trunk, again nothing happened even though the key fob was just a couple of feet away in a locked trunk.

The only option that I had left was to use the Ford App to unlock my vehicle, which worked like a charm.

Lesson learned!

My 2015 would refuse to engage the trunk latch if I tried to shut the key in the trunk, and would honk. Really great safety feature that was useful many times. Did they really get rid of this safety feature in the updated '24 model year?

Yes mine did - not tried on my S650

not sure if your jacket is RFID blocking or your battery is low? My car won't lock with key on convertible top (top up) or in trunk.

Today, I went to my Ford dealership to schedule a routine oil change. I also asked the service manager why I was able to lock my key fob in the trunk, and was unable to unlock my vehicle yesterday once the key fob was locked in the trunk.

Prior to tossing my jacket with my key fob in the trunk yesterday, I had done a remote start to briefly warm the vehicle up before I got in.

I was told because the engine was running the security parameters had changed and because of this the vehicle would not unlock unless I used the Ford App to unlock my vehicle.

I did check to see if I could toss my key fob in the trunk without starting the engine, and in this instance the trunk would not lock, the horn would honk twice, and the taillights would briefly flash.

Thank you for your feedback.

Gotta love the Ford App for that reason alone. Glenn

So, if I understand the update correctly, it all depends on whether or not the car is running? That almost makes sense.

Since my car is properly equipped with three pedals, I can't do a remote start, so this kind of thing should not happen to me. Regardless, I'm going to try different scenarios today just to confirm.

Thanks for the PSA!

That's a stupid Ford program. So if you didn't have your phone on you, you'd be stuck watching your car running with no way to get in it?!?

Hey don't toss your jacket in the truck without removing the key fob. Just a PSA reminder. :sunglasses:

(silent note to self: don't do this, wife will laugh)

In looking back at that day, I'm thankful that I had my phone with me and the Ford App on my phone. What I have learned is to always keep my key fob with me, and not assume that just because it is close by (in this case in the trunk) that I will still be able to access my vehicle.

Back in way back we used to use those hide-a-key boxes for just these occasions.
