ive only been able to see the gear indicator while playing with the paddles.

i do think this is one of the many things that ford will add with a furture OTA update to the car.
Maybe something Ford forgot about.
Our 2020 F150 Limited shows what gear your in all the time.
10 through one or there's button on the side of the gearshift lever and you can turn it off.

That's so you can limit the truck to only being able to operate in a certain gear range (e.g., limit to 1-8 and do not shift into 9 or 10 when in fully automatic mode), primarily used when towing to keep it out of the higher overdrive gears.

When it's displaying the gears, use the up/down toggle on the thumb end of the shifter tee handle to set the max useable gear (up or down). You will see the higher gears "grey out". When the truck shifts while driving, you'll see it avoid the gears that you locked out.

I’m given to understand that the New-ish Raptors - maybe ’21 onward behave like the Mustang now, not the gear de-select/select buttons. I have a ’17 Rap and it behaves as you describe.
I think in ... ’19? Ford removed the console lights for the gear selector. The faux outrage this generated online was comical.

I hope they add it in a future update, but my 2019 never showed the gear either unless using the paddles. That’s one thing I like about the 10 speed in my F-250; it displays the gear all the time.

Edit: I should clarify my 2019 Mustang did not have the digital dash. It sounds from others' comments that the S550 digital dash does display what gear you are in, but the standard dash does not.
I agree.
Our 2020 F-150 4x4 Limited has the 10-Speed button gear indicator on the Left side of the gear shift knob.
You can turn it on or off.

My '21 F150 Platinum has the gear indicators in the dash between the speedo and tach. The up/down on the shift handle will grey out the gears so the truck won't operate in them.
