You really don’t have a leg to stand on. Most dealers put all their inventory on their flooring line of credit. Thus, everyday this vehicle is in inventory the dealer is accruing charges. Unfortunately you should have had a contingency plan if you thought you could have had a work conflict. The problem is on your end, not the dealers.

After ... How many months, and suddenly, without any advanced notification... Sure they CAN sell the vehicle but they SHOULDN’T. They should find a way to work with gent who made the order in the first place. OP said he’s on .gov orders, that should be enough to ask for some grace to make arrangements.

I hear what you’re saying. 20 years ago, I’d have done exactly that. But I don’t have the luxury of time to restart a search all over again and OP probably doesn’t either. He!!, there are times when I will still do exactly as you counsel on principle alone but if you’ve made a several months order, which you presumably wanted a lot, try to make it work.
I did exactly this a month ago had an order that wasn't moving dealership was lying - got my deposit back found one in Virginia on the ground 250 miles away. I looked at photo's only and the dealer assured me the car was straight I bought it sight unseen, signed paperwork with esign and dealer delivered the car.

That was the 6th car in 4 years I have bought exactly that way, had a problem with one of my purchases in 2019. I bought a 2019 Dodge HellCat wide body from Hendricks in Cary, NC paid cash, saw pictures never saw the car in person. Car was shipped to me and when it arrived it had a chunk out of the plastic on the front bumper (shipper took a picture of it before loading) so the accident happened between the time I saw pictures and it got loaded for shipment (lot accident). Told the shipper do not take the car off the truck. Called the sales manger who started yelling the shipper did it - I told him the shipper showed me pictures before he loaded it. Bottom line car went back and I got every single penny back I paid. They wanted to repair it and ship it back and I told them I did not want to do any business with them because OBVIOUSLY they can't be trusted. So even if you have an issue they are responsible and it's your choice whether to repair or send back for full refund.

lol the salesman is bluffing, he just wants to add another car to the tally of sales this month. S650s are sitting on lots everywhere, who's he going to sell it to? Either call his bluff or tell him to kick rocks.

It's sad to see the other people in this thread that would be pressured to sign papers on a $40k+ purchase without even seeing it in person. Just remember when you have the money you have the power, it's not the other way around

what type of job do you have that you don't have half an hour to go look at it. Do you work 24/7? They could leave it out overnight to see it. Do you work 7 days a week? Sounds like an excuse. Send someone you trust to go see it? Sounds like you don't want it very badly.
Exactly what I thought when I read the thread.
Maybe this is why the dealership wants to "sell OP's custom order" since OP is taking their sweet ass time. They probably know excuses when they see them and if I had to guess OP isn't ready to buy right now. Bad timing I'm sure. I feel bad for OP but at the same time the dealership needs to move metal.

I ordered mine through a Dealer 1100 miles away and never met anyone there but trusted them and Ford to do the right thing if anything was wrong.....I paid for it and it was at my door the next day!!

Sometimes ya just gotta roll the dice and hope for the best.......if Ford cannot please ya.....sell it and move on!!

The SPOTLIGHT is on your......finish you "deal" or move on!!

Signed the papers sight unseen like most here, dealer was roughly 500 miles away but it was EXACTLY what i wanted. Custom order + waiting so long to get it, if thats a problem you dont want the car bad enough. No worries, just move on

While the OP hasn't responded to this, he is in Texas. For all we know, he works on an offshore oil rig and arrived for a multi-week shift the day before the dealership contacted him. Maybe he's a truck driver that works nation-wide and is only in town on Sundays when dealerships are closed. Maybe he is a lineman from Fort Worth and is currently in Houston repairing the damage from Hurricane Beryl and won't be back until early August.

Seems a bit odd for people to call someone out with no real information on the specific situation.
Nobody called him out. We gave him advice on how to ensure he gets to buy the car he ordered.

If you are with the government on orders. Have your command contact the dealership in writing and by phone to give them a reason to hold the car. You have some protection if doing gov work.
Show us how he can force a car dealership to hold a car for him for weeks or months because he works for the government. I gotta see this one ...

Also threaten to expose them on all media outlets. They will back off to avoid looking like the previous dealerships who tired that and got exposed.
I have to see some examples of a car dealership being "exposed" for not holding a vehicle for weeks or months. Show us.

But it would not hurt to get someone you trust to go look at the car and you electronically do the paperwork.
The only legitimate advice you've given.

I don't recommend threatening people with litigation, it won't improve negotiations.
^ This

OP just needs to reach an agreement with the dealership for the storage of the car for a month,
even if that requires buying the car now and putting the storage as an addendum to the purchase agreement.
^ And this

Dealers sell cars every day. Dealers trade cars with other dealers every day. Rolling the dice that the car you ordered and waited for won't be sold or traded is probably not a good choice.

This is no high end super sportscar. It's a Mustang. $40K is chump change compared to most cars produced by US nameplates.

Just remember when you have the money you have the power, it's not the other way around
Just remember: A guy coming into the showroom who's ready to buy a car has FAR more power than someone who's not there, not the other way around.

haha come on, you know the salesman is bluffing. Go outside and look at the Ford lots that are overflowing with S650s. I barely see any on the road and when I do it's usually an ecoboost.

The average American can't afford to buy a brand new mustang in this economy. The Federal Reserve raised interest rates so much that it cooled the hysterical market we've had for the past four years.

At end of the day like I said when you have the money, YOU have the power.

The CEO of Dodge got involved and pulled a last call vehicle to replace a custom order that was sold out from under a servicemember that was deployed.

I don’t want to be “that guy”, but if you’ve waited this long, have them take detailed photos and a video and just e-sign the paperwork.

It is not a $200k Ferrari, it’s a Mustang. What could really be so wrong with it?
Wellllll....mine had a lot of shipping damage on it and even after letting them send it out for repairs it was unacceptable. They did order me a replacement and let me keep the original until the replacement was delivered. Looking back it was a sweet deal. I got to use the first one for four months and put 4600 miles on it for free. When the new one came in they stood by their "We Owe" contract and I left with my new damage free car without owing a single cent more.
