Anyone done brakes (pads +/- rotors) on the base GT brakes? Hoping to gather info (like official torque specs) since it's a regular maintenance item, but there aren't any Youtube tutorials with detailed info yet.
I partially disassembled my brakes to paint the calipers, and here are some things I learned:
Definitely use Brake Maintenance Mode. Lots of posts online including on this forum, but one part I've often seen mis-posted:
- when entering BMM, push-hold the parking brake button DOWN (as if releasing the parking brake)
- when exiting BMM, pull-hold the parking brake button UP (as if engaging the parking brake)
Perhaps either pushing/pulling works? What I listed above makes logical sense though, since you want the parking brake fully released in BMM, and you want it to squeeze again when exiting BMM.
Front Brakes (if just changing pads):
- You will need to hammer out 2 brake pad support pins. You will need a punch tool or Allen key (4mm or 5/32").
- You will need to undo the caliper bridge cross bolt. The bolt head is 13mm, and has Loctite from the factory. I could not find an official torque spec for this, but based on similar brakes w/cross bolts, maybe 22 lb-ft?
- Squealer on top of outer pad.
Rear Brakes (if just changing pads):
- The caliper bolts are now 10mm (not 13mm like S550s), and have Loctite from the factory (S550s only had Loctite on the caliper bracket bolts). I could not find an official torque spec, but based on S550s, maybe 24 lb-ft?
- Since the caliper bolts now have Loctite, they're technically 1-time use and replaced them every time you crack them open, like when inspecting/removing/changing your pads. Ford's OEM replacement pads (BRF1911) include 4 new bolts.
- You will need a 17mm wrench to keep the caliper slide pins from spinning when removing the caliper bolts.
- There was no lube anywhere except for the caliper slide pins. Pad ears, abutment clips, backs of pads--all dry. I've seen various opinions online, but it appears Ford factory only lubes the slide pins.
- Squealer on bottom of inner pad.
- Be sure to reconnect the electrical plugs for the parking brakes afterwards. I forgot on one side and the car got stuck in Brake Maintenance Mode.
