Just finished the Pioneer sub upgrade.
Pretty easy with a Dremel and metal cutting wheel.
Definitely a worthwhile upgrade.
Ended up costing my wife one throw pillow… lol
Thanks for all the tips!

Appears the consensus is most feel this is a worthwhile upgrade. But the realistic expectation is when listening to anything other than boom boom music in the "6-12" volume range the difference will be minimal.

I'm in the rock/country crowd.

I tried poly-fil with the factory B&O sub since I had good results in my 2010 F150 with the factory Sony sub. But it was a complete waste of time.

I decided to give the DD Audio SW10-D4 a shot.

Did a little upgrade on the stock subwoofer after following a thread on the s550 forums. The pioneer replacement subwoofer was only $79 and took less than an hour to do!

Sounds tighter and more crisp than the OEM subwoofer.

Honestly kind of surprised with how much better it sounds over the crappy cardboard subwoofer that comes factory.

I figured I would make a video on the install because I couldn't find one and its just easier to follow along a video than sift through 40 pages of a forum thread

Man I started to watch your video since I never saw a video on how to do it but unfortunately it was not what I expected. 1 shot the subwoofer was there and another shot the subwoofer was out. I was hoping to see on how to do it.

I felt like this was a no-brainer first project. Relatively inexpensive, relatively easy, reportedly meaningful results…what’s not to love?

Very easy project start to finish. Pioneer speaker is down to $70 on amazon. I had some left over fiberfill and generic dynamat left over from another project.

First observation: FoMoCo’s purchasing department should be ashamed of the components they’re sourcing for the expensive, “upgraded” B&O system. The system is honestly underwhelming.

Comparison photos between the OEM and Pioneer:

Installation was straightforward and even the clips holding the trim ring were not too bad. Stuffed the interior of the cabinet with fiberfill and covered the exterior with dynamat.

Got the enclosure reinstalled and eagerly fired up the system…

Something’s got to be wrong, I can barely hear the bass. About what the stock driver sounded like. Surely I’ve got polarization wrong or bumped a wire loose. Tore the whole thing down and started from scratch. Even A/B’d the OEM unit and the Pioneer.

Everything checked and reinstalled…still lackluster.

Now, maybe it’s just the music I’m listening to (70s/80s Yacht Rock) and/or the listening level (volume at 10-12) but, this was not an upgrade. Still glad I did it to get a project under my belt but, if you’re on the fence maybe there’s another project to tackle.

I have a JBL center speaker for the dash inbound. I’ll put that in next week and keep my fingers crossed for a noticeable improvement. Amazon links:
