I’ve seen previous gen 5.0s run 5w-50 and I know the whipple 4th gen 5.0s use 5w-50 and I just want to know if it will be a problem if I use 5w-50 on my na 4th gen just for the protection.

Edit: I have the track pack had well. I don’t necessarily track the car but I’ve taken it to the mountains and driven pretty hard on the daily

The differences in going from a 30 to a 50 weight oil are not slight. Two reasons for the 30 weight are tighter clearances and low-tension piston rings used in a modern engine.

Changing weights after installing a Whipple, making similar mods or tracking during peak Summer months can be understood: the internal forces of the engine have now changed.

Millions of Coyotes are on the road with high mileage using the recommended oil weight. If there's data supporting a change in requirement, great. Otherwise, I'd leave as-is.

But it isn't 'extra protection' - it is the wrong oil for the engine which is designed for 0w-30 or 5w-30 so will be 'worse' not 'better'.

200K miles on my 2012 Mustang GT all on Motorcraft 5W-20 blend. I put 5w-50 in the Dark Horse only because it's Whipple's spec but dang does it annoy me spending 4x as much per oil change.

Probably. Just stick with real (not a blend) synthetic 5W30 and your engine will be fine.

A blend can mean anything. There is no spec. on how much is oil and how much is synthetic oil. I want to know what I'm getting.

Remember the track pack etc cars said to use 5W50 in the owners manual. Even though the engine was 100% the same as the non track pack cars

Engines aren't designed for certain oils. An oil is specified for the engine. Which (in the USA owners manual) is 5W20, 5W30, or 5W50 depending on the year of the car and depending on if it will be used for 'track use'

And then in Ford Europe you have 0W30

I remember seeing that and I have the track pack. And I’m just thinking it can’t be bad. The worst thing it would be to my wallet

If I was continually giving it the beans in a hot climate I'd use 5w-40. But I don't, 5w-30 will do fine.
I do not trust 5W-20 though, and I believe Toyota (I think) is speccing 0w-8 or 0w-16.
You may as well just pee in the oil pan.

Yes, but the OP did say his car is standard spec

Yes my car has 0w-30 in it as did my S550 for 6 years and 40k miles

I have the GT Performance Pack, and my car is now a dedicated track car. I run 5w-30 because I cannot find any definitive guidance that it is better to run 5w-50. I'm in the South and have tracked my car in near 100 degree heat. There are lots of guesses and assumptions, but nothing I can find from the manufacturer or those who have done any type of verifiable study. That's not to say 5w-50 is worse or better; I just simply haven't seen anything other than guesses.

Based on the fact that the owners manual specifies changing the differential oil every 500 miles for track use, but is silent as to using a different engine oil weight when tracking, I've decided to stick with the 5w-30, although I always run Motorcraft full synthetic. I change the oil after around 500 miles of track use.
