How (dangerously) stretched would a 275/35R19 tire be on a 19x11 wheel (my DH w/HP)

I am looking into a winter wheel/tire set up--e.g., Steeda Tridents 19x10 all around.

However, I happen to have a set of 275/35R19 winters still in excellent condition. As such, I was toying with the idea of trying to fit them on my DH (with the HP wheels: 19x10.5F / 19x11R). I don't do a lot of driving in the winter--mostly errands, but no long hauls and certainly no "sporty" driving.

Not worried about the fronts--I've run that spec before. But, wondering if anyone has any experience with a 275/35 on a 19x11 wheel...

I quick Google search shows that would be at the limit of the recommended minimum tire size for an 11 inch wheel. It probably would work but but if it were me I'd be concerned using the absolute minimum tire size on that wheel. I guess it comes down to if you are comfortable with that. Maybe try to sell them if your worried about the cost of them going to waste. Cheers

Yup, ran the same search. So, I was looking to see if anyone had any experience. I know that tire size is the min limit. I've run min limit configs in the past, but not on the DH.

Yeh, was thinking the same thing. Not sure I care all that much. Maybe I'm just being cheap--wanting to use up a set of Winters that I would otherwise have no use for.

11" is the max for a 275/35/19...its going to be stretched but still listed as safe.

Ugh, what a dork--I've never actually checked that (at all, ever, in my life!). My winter tire of choice (and I've gone through a bunch of brands over the years) is Vredestein Wintrac Pro+. Their stated rim range is 9-11" for the tire to perform as designed. Their measuring rim width is 9.5, the width necessary for the tire to meet its "dimensional targets."

Every manufacturer is different for sure. A lot of folks just seem to look at tires based on only the sidewall numbers i.e. 275/35 R19. However; variances between manufacturers does exist....especially with the max/min wheel widths and weight of the tires. Shoot, there can be 5 pounds per tire difference between different tire brands of the same size on high performance summer tires. Even worse with off road/ truck tires, depending on the load range and ply ratings. It makes me chuckle a bit when someone talks about the weight savings of the expensive forged wheels they bought then slaps a set of tires that add 5 extra pounds per tire over comparable brands onto those wheels without question. Or...when someone slaps a set of large 10 ply all terrain or off road tires on their truck and complains that there truck feels slower.

Based on the ETRTO dimensional standards, a 275/35R19 tire can be fitted to a 19x11 wheel. The approved rim-width range for this tire size is generally 9.0 to 11.0 inches, so an 11-inch wheel is acceptable, although it is right at the maximum permitted width.


The tire will look slightly stretched and provide less protection for the wheel lip, but technically it is still within the approved range. However, I would also recommend checking the technical data sheet for the specific tire brand and model, as the tire manufacturer’s approval should always take precedence.


This answer is also based on my professional experience of more than 15 years in wheel development, including work with GM and Land Rover.

Thats what these forums are for...one thing I would keep in mind. Be very careful with a 275 tire on a 11" wide wheel. You won't have any rim protection at all and opening yourself up to wheel damage.

Do you plan on using summer tires on the front in CO?

I'm not sure I follow. I'm currently running to stock trofeo rs tires. I will switch to A/S once they are done. However, I always run 3PMSF in the winter (having lived in CT, ND, DC, CO, etc, winter tires are just part of my DNA).
