Up until a month ago the difference between stereo and surround was lost on me. Everything was biased to the right side at all times because of single side deafness, so it really made no difference to me, I couldn't appreciate the system in the car.

But now with my cochlear implant on the left --- WOW, what a difference in sound! I know hear in 360 degrees. The B&O system sounds much better to me today. I know that some say it isn't good, but for me it is really good with my new "direct injection hearing" on the left side.

Surround sound just sounds more spacious. The speakers sound further apart. Plain stereo sounds like mono in comparison.

But everybody hears differently. I saw a video where Rick Beato was talking about how his kids can identify an AI produced song instantly when others can’t tell the difference. They said there’s a phase to the vocals that are painful to hear….different ears hear different things.

I go back and forth... stereo is better for older music, surround is better for HD (surround) sources.

I agree. Certain modern music is produced with channels coded in. Just like a movie is setup for surround sound. When you listen to Led Zeppelin, you won't get any benefit from surround and it may sound worse as the processor is trying to create what isn't there. But listen to songs that were created with multi channel production and you'll get a benefit from an audio system that can decode and play it.

Yep, a lot of music from the "early" stereophonic era just doesn't sound right in surround.

Remember what we played that music on way back then?
Mine was very lo fi
Well, I did spend a lot on a turntable back in the day. But in the car, ugh! 8-track or cassette!

I stayed with cassette because I didn't want to cut a DIN hole in my 3 hole 69 Camaro dash just to get CD capability. I mean, it had auto reverse so no need to get crazy... LOL...
