I am very confused…this is all news to me. The more I research this the more vague the true answer is.
All you have to do is look at it while on a lift and there is the entire exhaust system....legal in the U.S. It's all there. Engineered to get exhaust out the back and engineered in sound through the exhaust, not the electronics unless you call an AE butterfly valve "electronics". It's beyond me why people don't get the AE option but their business.

As mentioned before, at least the GT with the 12 speaker B&O uses the "ESE" (Electronic Sound Enhancement) as Ford calls it officially.
People like myself who installed an aftermarket amp and a better sub run into this as it adds deep tones played through the sub which then mess up the bass from the music.

Here is a video how it works on Gen6 Ecoboosts, I can imagine for the Gen7 GTs it's the same principle:

Can be turned off via Forscan.

In the comparison video with M2 and Corvette in another thread it is also mentioned.

Following the “Meh” thread you all go into it pretty deeply. Seems those who dug the deepest are convinced there’s Enhanced Exhaust tone through the stereo even in the GT.

Ford even advertised that even the GT has enhanced sound from the speakers.

Ok, but this whole thread is about fake exhaust sound. What you are explaining sounds like a noise canceling function for the audio system.

The confusion here is (at least for me) most people here don't know wtf Electronic Noise Enhancement is, and are conflating it with fake engine noise. Am I wrong?

When I downloaded the as built file it showed ANC and ESE to be inactive from the factory. My car is a base GT with only automatic and 3.55 rear options.

Think my window sticker says it has ESE, too.

Noise canceling plays sound picked up by dedicated mics with inverted phase so that soundwaves eliminate themselves. This is done to eliminate unwanted noise.
What ESE does is playing specific drone sounds depending on the engine revs and gas pedal as you can hear in the video.

The confusion with the ANC is that the ESE might or will interact with the ANC system as to not interfere with it.

Disconnecting ANC mics might for that reason also disable ESE.
But both serve different purposes.

And as the video shows and the word "enhancement" indicates: it's not about playing an exact exhaust soundfile, but to enhance the actual sound.
The fact that so many people don't believe it's there and like the sound, shows, that Ford did a good job.
I don't like any kind of artificial enhancement and also like to listen to music at times, so ESE had to be disabled.

@FredGT probably really just active on B&O equipped cars.

Good lord. Can you explain what ANC and ESE are?

ANC = Active Noise Cancelation to eliminate noise

ESE = Electronic Sound Enhancement to add whatever sound elements to engine/exhaust sound

Both played through the B&O speakers in GTs.

Easy test is to unplug the speakers, don’t touch anything else, just unplug the speaker and see what type of noise comes from them after.

doesn’t cadillac do the same noise cancellation with their vehicles?

Anyone else notice, dodge stopped making muscle cars and the fake sounds threads dried up, fritztronic kinda proved their point, and now that it seems they are back in the game , here come the piped in noise threads once again.

You would have to unplug more than one speaker.
What should an unplugged speaker play?
Do you still believe it's not there?

Fords own statement to using it, frequency measurements, multiple users whose subwoofers playing normal only after setting ESE to off in Forscan should be proof enough.
And above linked video with the isolated ESE sound shows exactly what is happening.
These sounds play in various frequencies, so it cannot only be the sub playing it as it only plays low frequencies.
