i ordered the parts. Bronco headlamp switch and the five buttons should be here in a week. the F-150 headlamp switch is on backorder, so no ETA on that

making OEM-style icons for the buttons now. it looks like Ford usually constrains icons to a 10x10mm domain, and uses 0.5mm strokes, really only doing outlines. sometimes they fill things in too. here is my attempt at a trunk release icon. made using Inkscape.

holding that many buttons feels weird, almost illegal. also, the upper-left button on the headlamp switch still pops the trunk

got the 7th button today. also good news on the cupholder front: i got the new lighting rings look like they are roughly the right shape! this will likely be good to model a cupholder for

I'll be interested to see where you end up with the cupholder!
I ordered all the parts to put the Corsair one in, but just wasn't happy with how it was going to fit.

BTW, if you were not already aware; the light rings can be removed from the Corsair cupholder as well and might provide some different options if the new ones you ordered don't work out.

so i decided to use some buttons that are going to be replaced on the headlamp switch anyways to test paint colors and removing the icons. my first attempt at removing the icons (or rather, the paint around them. the icons themselves are gaps in the paint to the translucent plastic) used my favorite material removal tool; dremel with an abrasive buffing wheel. i ended up putting too much pressure and now the button has the wavy texture of obsidian. attempt 2 used the little green cone stone thing at min speed with no pressure to break up the paint. then i used a mix of the abrasive buffing wheel at min speed with no pressure and 800 grit sandpaper. this worked so much better.

i then went to Home Depot and Lowe's to get some paint to test it out. i tried their closest matches; Tricorn Black from Lowe's, and Behr "Black" from Home Depot. here is the 10 minute drying results.

left is Behr "Black", and right is Lowe's Tricorn Black. the Behr paint is spot on. i will check again tomorrow morning too. ignore the absolutely terrible paint distribution, i dont think house paint was designed to be applied with a tiny brush. if tomorrow morning Behr still looks good, then i will head back to Home Depot and get a spray can of it. if Tricorn Black manages to take the lead, then off to Sherwin-Williams it is
