An automotive journalist who is critical of the direction their entire industry is headed might not be employed for too long. It's hard to enjoy reading any article while knowing the author's opinion may be heavily reliant on staying employed. The fact is Ford sold out the Mustang name. Failure to acknowledge this means you never cared about the Mustang in the first place or you're not in a position to be critical.

LOL.

No. Mustang isnā€™t a vibe. Itā€™s not ā€œthe force,ā€ the Holy Spirit, or global magnetic resonance.

Itā€™s absolutely a format. Itā€™s a 2+2 coupe with a long hood, short deck, powerful engine, great styling, and enough customization options to make it your own.

the only people saying itā€™s ā€œa vibeā€ are those who want to sell you a bridge that doesnā€™t exist - or sell you on the idea that a truck, SUV, or motorcycle can be ā€œa mustang.ā€

these people donā€™t care about the Mustang. They care about keeping their writing jobs and trying to sound relevant in topics they donā€™t understand.

see Jay Leonā€™s reaction when the c8 corvette guy told him that customers are interested in an SUV corvette. LOL. PEOPLE MIGHT WANT A HOT ROD SUV, But they donā€™t want it confused with the corvette. Leno rightly thought that was either idiotic or an outright lie.

some people think if they can just package the same old idea in new and clever wording, it will take. Sorry. Some of us still have brains that function and memories that work.

Jesus...

Calling folks who think the Mustang should stay a pony car a narcissist. Top notch journalism right there.
someone who obviously doesnā€™t care belittling those who have a dog in the fight, as well as heart and soul investment is the ultimate disingenuous poser move.

sellout turd pieces like this arenā€™t going to serve him or C&D well in the long run.

ā€œhey everyone, we know you love the Mustang and donā€™t want to see it diluted beyond all meaning and recognition, but just get over it already. Some fat guys behind a table decided a skateboard can be a mustang and Iā€™m all for it, so stop being a narcissistic, selfish Luddite. God bless.ā€

basically what this guy is about. There will be a few that agree because they donā€™t care that much. But for the rest of us, what an attempted slap in the face / though he likely hurt his hand more than anyones face.

Pathetic.

Manā€™s been employed by major car mags for nearly 20 years. I can promise you that heā€™s not concerned about criticizing a motor company šŸ˜‚

They stated that a lot of times now. Current regulations are based on fleet emissions, so they had to come up with a good selling BEV to be able to compensate ICEs. In the end we only got a Gen 7 with a V8 because the Mach-E sells so well. Without the Mach-E there wouldn't be another ICE Mustang. So no matter if you like the Mach-E or not, we should be thankful they chose this approach over making the real Mustang a BEV

And their CAFE targets will only get more strict. On top of that, when major markets like California and NY choose to ban ICE vehicles, you know that OEMs will scrap any notion of wasting R&D on that front. Will the Mustang go away when the FE/RWD/2+2 ICE combo is no longer a logistical possibility?

Not at all. Thatā€™s all Ezraā€™s alluding to in this article. Heā€™s a little blunt with the word ā€œnarcissist,ā€ but heā€™s making valid points. Ford wonā€™t be killing off a nameplate with 60 years of cachet; theyā€™ll be pumping out EVs with a Mustang twist.

When these major markets find out the BEV does not work on a mass scale ICE will be back.

The article sounds like it was written by a child. I predict the approach will fail like New Coke.
When all the folks who actually care about what a Mustang should be are gone, so will that business. Too much competition, not enough panache, too materialistic buyers and lack of Mustang connection to draw from will alienate younger buyers with far more choices. If any of the designs using the Mustang name succeeds and I hope it does, it wonā€™t be because of the name.

Good read, thanks.

Because that is a recent corruption of journalistic integrity that tramples on all that the profession has stood - no, never mind, I can't do this. I keep cracking up.

Ah. someone pulled out "New Coke." Wondered when that would happen.

People dig way back for that one, because there are so few good examples of the kind of market research crash-and-burn that they're looking for.

C'mon, someone yell "Edsel!"
