Why doesn't Ford make the rotary transmission found in the Shelby GT 500 available to all Mustangs?

Dial shifters were done as space savers on later model Fusions. Could easily be true on specific Explorers and the big DCT in the GT500. My 2010 Fusion Sport has a stick in a his and hers type configuration. I still use it as my daily driver, I basically bought a bunch of Steeda parts for it along with a 93 tune and custom high flow exhaust. Dynoed at 310HP up from the factory 263. Still fun the drive, easily will take a 5.0 F-150.

Honestly I really don't like the rotary dial, you always have to look at it to know what you're shifting to. A really nicely deisgned shifter with real leather and metal or carbon elements is not only easier to use but also looks way better imho.

If you think a dial is crap, look at some of the Honda, Kia, and Nissan models. They actually use two controls. Geez!

Oh! While we're on this, how about a switch for the Emergency Brake (hand brake, parking brake, etc.). In the rare event that the regular brakes don't work, what the heck do you do? Head for the ditch?

Because it is not an 'emergency' brake it is a parking brake. The reason they are electronic is because they apply the parking brake to full force which with a manual parking brake many people don't.

It is virtually impossible for the brakes to fail completely on a Mustang unless somebody is deliberately trying to kill you, in which case you have bigger problems!

1. because most car people don't like the rotary shifter
2. the DCT is a shift-by-wire transmission (electronically controlled), but the 10 speed in the GT is shift-by-cable (has a physical braided wire cable connecting the shifter to the transmission.

You pull up on the brake switch and it engages the e brake. give it a try next time you’re alone on an open stretch of road. A little scary but it just stops your car.

I genuinely do not understand the distaste for dial/rotary shifters.
Spin it all the way to the right, you're in drive. Two clicks to the left, in reverse. All the way to the left, in park. And they are compact and out of the way.

There is no need for this thing - it's not a stick-shift.

Dial shifter is the worst invention since auto start/stop

And then Honda said hold my beer...

My wife has a new Cadillac CT5 and the shifter takes some getting used to. In order to go into reverse you have to push the button the side and push the shifter FORWARD to go to reverse.

To go to drive you pull it back. But if you are going from park to drive, you have to push the button. If going from reverse to drive if you push the button and pull back it goes into "manual mode" and not drive; if you are in reverse then you just pull back.

To go into neutral from drive, push the button and push forward once. To go to reverse push the button and push forward again.

To go into park, push the top button.

A rotary dial would be a lot easier. Or the push button on the dash like she had on her Lincoln. Or even the automatic like on the Mustang - to go into reverse push the release and pull back.

I think the VAG system is hard to beat.
You have normal PRND, once in D you can pull back on the shifter to get trans auto sport mode, and move it sideways to get manual shifting by paddles or lever.
