Under my 2024 Mustang GT there are 2 unused plugs wrapped with a heat shield. One on each side of the exhaust pipes below the engine. What option are they for ?

I think those are for the underglow option. :giggle:

IDK. Maybe my comments can clarify someone's thoughts and bring an answer.

Connections supporting the powertrain in that area come from the direction of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), then down from on top and attach. To come under and then across, seems like a liability.

Connections supporting the interior and seating come from the direction of the Body Control Module (BCM), often run down the centerline and console area, then to the item of interest.

Ford will use as few hardnesses as possible, for design simplicity and less cost. Anything not needed is simply left in-place and unused. But if an optional device would be used in that area, what would it be? Coming across to the exhaust or transmission seems to deviate from the other connections. Coming that far back and then returning to the area of the front suspension doesn't seem right either.

It could be something from another model, not used. It could be a new feature, yet to be implemented.

I began thinking of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). There are several sensors in the door, to detect a side impact. I wonder if these were run to connect to a sensor on the unibody, to further define the intensity of a crash. Now or in the future.

While well-run and attached with purpose, one thing I wish Ford would have done: cap the ends of the plugs. Outside and underneath the car, I'd prefer a simple dust cover/cap to protect from the elements.

If you look closely at the plugs in question, you'll notice they are capped. Look at the safety clip which secures the connectors.

One more thing. This certainly isn't for future upgrades. If they were, the bean counters would have long-since removed them!

I see that now. Looks like they attached a male dummy plug into the female end. And affixed to the frame.

I'm wondering...the Mustang is not the only Ford with a 5.0L or a V-8. And from reports of cat thefts, I'm aware trucks like the Tundra have as many as four.

I wonder if the S650 is sharing part of its powertrain harness with the F150, Expedition or other model, these connectors being left unused.

That’s where the ev assist connects. Doh. No, seriously nice find, will be interesting to hear the true use.

Could be for opf sensors on euro models. If I remember I'll try and have a look under mine at the weekend

Could be for the active exhaust, if your car did not have it installed.

it is not for that. that wiring harness is in the back because the valves are part of the exhaust tips

I've been looking at and reading what I can about Ford's OPF/GPF units.

From the documents and pictures (general stock, non-Mustang photos) I've seen, there are four connections:

- Upstream O2 sensor
- Downstream O2 sensor
- Exhaust gas temperature sensor (associated with the GPF)
- Exhaust gas pressure sensor (associated with the GPF)

O2 sensors and connections: check.

For the OPF/GPF, those are in different sections of the exhaust (like 1-2 ft, .3-.6 m apart). While a single plug with a "Y" connector could support both sensors and then reach back, I've not see that. Each sensor has it's own connector and associated wiring.

I'm not doubting its possible. Or that Ford is using the same harness or sections for different specs. Using a single plug connection just seems different from what I've found (and what little, detailed insight there is).

I’ll take a look under mine this weekend. My GT is fully loaded. Possibly being used for a car with 401a package PP and magna ride.

If you look at the wiring attached to the gearbox they go all over the place and include exhaust sensors.
an 8 pin connector (looks like 2x 4 pin) would be enough for a pair of PT sensors on both banks.

I have looked at some data on the app torque and my car does have at least pressure sensors either side of the particulate filter.

Temperature wise I have egt and cat temperature

It was also just a guess as to something that would be in that area. I’ll have a nosey tomorrow if it’s not raining as normal
