GPS Nav (Waze/Maps) works well down here. But every trip we've done to Italy always has a lot of GPS glitches. It's like it calculates shortest route which also could shorten your lifespan.
yeah, I'm not surprised about that...

Also, in Australia google maps is not good outside big cities.

OK, interesting. I've only driven the Queensland coast areas and Adelaide/Barossa and didn't notice problems. I wonder if "something" is interfering with GPS

Phone reception is patchy in many regional areas and often non-existent in remote areas; there you need downloaded maps (like Hema for example) or physical maps.
Plenty of tourists or backpackers rescued in regional/remote areas because they followed google maps.
I personally had to help tourists when they run out of fuel for their hatchback and got lost because they didn't have reception and relied on google maps.

Not all of the subscription costs goto the car manufacturer as profit.
All of the 'app' and remote features go via the cellular network to the vehicle.
That 4G access in the vehicle isn't free, network access costs in america are way higher and the costs are being passed on.
The manufacturers are paying for it to OTA update the vehicle and provide user features so they're recouping the costs in subscriptions that piggy back onto the already installed and paid for hardware ...

Charging for streaming access on android auto is a new one ... unless it uses the vehicles data plan to do it. The whole point of android auto and alike is that everything is handled by the phone and just mirrored to the in car screen.
