I completed my first track event at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama this past weekend, and I was very happy once again with how my car performed. I'm still fairly new to tracking, and was in the Novice - Instructed group, but did get passed for solo driving for the second day. This was an HPDE event with Just Track It. Here are a few comments about my experience and the new setup with the car.
Tires - I am running Continental Extreme Contact Force 295/30/19 on Steeda Trident 19x11 wheels square with a 28mm front spacer. Front camber was set at -3.3 and rear at -2.1. Front toe out of .1 and rear toe in of .25. I was extremely happy with how the tires performed. They never felt like they were getting greasy or losing grip even on the last session of day two where there was only thirty minutes between the final runs. I ended up running them at 39psi hot, and they gripped better as the day went on. I've very pleased with the ECF for use in HPDE events.
New seats/harness, cage - This was my first time out with the Cobra Nogaro seats, Schroth Quick Fit Pro harness with sub straps, and Watson Racing 4 point bolt in cage. I can't express what a difference having the seats and harnesses made with driving. It was so much more comfortable out on the track as I didn't once have to think about holding myself in place. The seats are not ideal for daily driving, but they felt great after 30 minute sessions on the track. This was easily the best upgrade for the track I have made yet.
Brakes - The PP Brembos with G-Loc R10 front R8 rears continue to perform well. I had no issues at all with brake fade for the entire weekend. This weekend took my pads down to about 5mm, so I'll be switching to my new set of R16/R12 for the next event at Road Atlanta in July.
Overall I had no issues with the car except for what I assume to be fuel starvation during one session. On the first day I wasn't refueling after every session, and I started a session with about 5/8 of a tank of fuel per the gauge. When it got to around 3/8, every time I came around turns 5/6 which is a tight left hand turn where you accelerate hard through the apex and the track keeps sweeping left through turn 7, the car would lurch several times and then finally take off. The accelerator pedal was to the floor at the time this would occur. It would only do it on this one corner, but it did it every single time in the exact same spot for the final 4-5 laps of the session. After the second time, I though it was likely the fuel sloshing to the right side of the tank on the long left hand turn. From that point on I ran every session with a full tank of fuel and never had another issue.
The weather was perfect on the track with temperatures around 80 at the hottest, so it wasn't blistering like some of my previous events. Car temps all stayed reasonable, and once again I had no issues with the axle overheating since I now have the cooler added. It was a great weekend at the track, and I'm looking forward to going back to Barber in November. It is an amazing facility and track, and I highly recommend anyone go who is anywhere nearby.
