I'm not surprised. When computer keyboards were introduced to 'common man' they were essentially those used my commercial equipment. The lettering was molded with the symbols and letters molded into the plastic. As the key wore down, you could still clearly see the lettering. Nowadays, everything is painted on or stamped on with what amounts to an ink-pad impression. All of this is just another way to cheapen consumer products.

And think about this. If the keys are not backlit, you know instantly the letters and symbols are cheaply installed!

But you have a really good clear coat you are applying to the new keys. Of course you ensured the surface was prepped before spraying (without damaging the lettering) I would assume.

I'm not saying this was the cause in this example, but for anyone who routinely uses hand sanitizer products or cleaning products that involve alcohol, ammonia or similar substances, they can seriously affect coatings, paint and finishes. Items such as inner door handles, shift knobs and buttons are often the first to be affected, as they are so frequently used.

Learn to tap, not rub the buttons with your dirty fingers. 😉

Hand cleanser / sun cream / sanitiser etc will cause this
Back before Ford took away the Raptor center stripe - now it's just a stitched, blank area the same colo(u)r as the steering wheel, some owners were complaining about the center stripe getting worn away. My suggestion for the first 1 or 2 was Rit dye in red. Then I started asking if these folks ever washed their hands! I'm going on 9 years and the center stripe is great. I do have some regular leather wear but it's a steering wheel, there's hopefully going to be some wear in the locations where your hands are a lot.

This kind of wear can come from a lot of things. On my last Mustang, which was admittedly in the previous century and early 2000's, I took the Mustang to the beach, came back to find wear on the tan door panel and armrest, caused by the sunblock I was using - and proven by the mechanic who replaced the door panel. I guess that was a known issue.

Obviously if you're working with any kind of chemicals, clean your hands off. Even if you think it's not harmful, Ford isn't testing their interior with acetone, pvc glue, etc. Like the folks on the cruise ships tell you: Washy washy with soap and water!!!

buttons weren’t that bad, after I got the new one I was scratching it intentionally to see how durable it was with my finger,, but yeah really only the cruise buttion started chipping. but I’ve used this paint for years, very resilient, my 06 mustang buttons still looked perfect after selling it with 200k miles almost,

2024 gt with almost 60k on it, started noticing button paint chipping, decided to order two new buttons and put a proper clearcoat so this doesn’t happen again, wonder if anyone else is having this issue.

There's always those back ventilated, kangaroo skin driving gloves to keep the buttons looking good, and you looking like a 1950's British driving God. Handlebar mustache optional.

I saw this in many of the IT departments that I ran. There was always a small group of women who used excessive amount of hand lotions or others that just had super acidic sweat or oils. I don't know if it was due to diet or their PH. But they would always show up in 3 to 6 months and we'd have to replace the keyboards at their desk or on their laptops (backlit or not). The steering wheels in their cars looked like they had been lacquered too. Hand sanitizer is absolutely another culprit and it's true they're just making stuff less durable now.
