So what is everybody using in the US?
FL500s is still widely sold in the US. But I did hear somebody say his dealership put something else inside. So yeah, dealers my use some other filter that also works. But I prefer to stick to the parts written in the manual.

Just did my 2nd OC and I'm once again using PUP 5w-30 and a Motorcraft FL-500S filter P/N AA5Z-6714-A. This is the 14 fluted variety.

One thing I did discover is that MotivX Tools sells a very high quality tool which fits this filter perfectly. It's not cheap, but it's a nice tool..

Which one is the right one? They both say Fl500s wrench, but the sizes are different. No idea why.

The 74mm / 75.2mm one is the correct one.

Okay thanks. And can you tell me why this helped? Some say you can easily do this with your hands. I'm now on the edge to buy them or not buy them.

It depends upon who did the work installing the oil filter you are trying to remove. Some think it is like some sort of contest to see how tightly they can install it.

If it is installed with oil on the mating surface and by hand, then it is easy to remove by hand.

If it got cranked on there by a gorilla using a tool of some sort, well, good luck getting it off, and this tool in the photograph will help.

In my case, the factory worker.
Haven't done my first oil change yet.

Sorry for the delay. So it's certainly possible to use a strap wrench or one of the clamping type devices with jaws that go over the top and grab the filter however in my case, I have a rotator cuff issue so it's difficult for me to use a lot of force on the filter and this wrench fits perfectly which many of the less expensive versions do not.

So that being said, after wrenching for 50 years, for me it's hand tighten till gasket mates and then ~ 1/2 turn more either by hand or with a tool. So on vehicles that *I* have changed the oil/filter on usually no problem getting one removed. The wrench just makes it easier. Not always true if someone else installs the filter and having the correct tool makes it easy.

FWIW, my factory filter was VERY tight and I used a strap wrench to remove it as I hadn't purchased this tool yet. IMHO strap wrenches are a PITA to use.

Besides, I like high quality tools and this tool is VERY high quality.

Sorry for long reply.
HTH.
And happy wrenching!

Alright, I just ordered the oil filter wrench.
Bought it just in case, because moving to Europe mext month, and ordering parts from the USA from Europe can be expensive.
