Inferred vs Actual Oil Temperature - Results

Update from days 2 & 3 at Road Atlanta. More of the same thing I saw on day 1, although the high oil temperature from both days was 276 where I hit 280 on Friday. Temps via the AEM gauge and inferred reading on the dash were about as close as you could hope for. I never saw more than a 5 degree difference while on the track, so the inferred value looks very reliable when running 5w-50 on track. So for all the hassle of adding a true oil temperature sensor, I have come to the conclusion it really isn't necessary. Hopefully this eases people's minds when it comes to concern about our Mustangs using an inferred oil temperature reading.

Is a greater variance noticed as degradation occurs, granted won’t know until time to change.

I change oil after 2-3 track days (approximately 6-8 hours on track). FYI, my oil life monitor showed it was time for an oil change mid day on day 3.

So are you ok with 280° F or are you going to look for a way to cool it off a little?

I’m fine with 280 running an ester based oil and changing it every 6-8 hours.

I switched from Motorcraft 5w-50 Synthetic, a hydrocracked crude (Group 3), to Red Line 5w-50, an Ester (Group 5) and PAO (Group 4).
