Hi everyone.

Bought a DH, last year, from official dealer, EU spec. Brand new. Now I got around 10.000kms.

A week ago while doing a small weekend trip, flashing engine light (yellow). Car started to shake. Stopped, restarted and everything was fine.

Did notice a different vibration sometimes on startup, but not really noticeable.

Got the car to the dealer for the corresponding maintenance that the app was asking already, and told them about this.

They plugged the car to the computer to check and... I could see some pictures added on their dealer app that shows status of your car etc, spark plug removed, changed, run a few Kms, plugged again and... Still errors. Cylinder 1 coil issues... Now waiting for replacement from Germany.

I thought this was a known issue on S550 platform, not on this one.

Honestly, between this and the BCM recall, on a brand new car with these Kms... Worries me.

Should I ask for extend the factory warranty? Escalate the complaint to Ford HQ? Sell the car and that's it?

Anyone else had these issues?

Thanks.

My car also shakes/vibrates on startup. Like noticeably shakes …. Makes me think. 🤔 However no check engine light and running just perfect. What is considered as shaking during cold start I read is normal. I would love to know from others. Let us know the results. I have the car as well from germany brand new…

It's just a coil....no big deal. Replace and move on
Trip to dealer, Argue with dealer, Car is out of service, wait for parts, install parts, THEN move on.

Mine was down for 2 weeks waiting for a cat that failed because the tune warrantied by ford for my supercharger was too spicy. No loaner vehicle. Thanks Ford. Can't wait to see how long it will be in the shop to address the bad shocks and random rough idle.

Coils are readily available. Catalytic converters are a different story.

My Dark Horse has a moderate amount of shake/vibration while idling after startup but once at operating temp it idles smooth like greased shit on ice.

Mine (cold) shakes as well but the other day I've noticed it greatly: after being parked in the garage since the day before, I've had a very short trip (less than 1Km), parked along the street with the engine running, went in a shop for less than a minute.. and went out to find my gf scared as hell, because she thought there was a earthquake going on, but it was my DH undulating left and right (exactly like you expect when sitting in a car during a earthquake). I've noticed that the movement was amplified because I had the wheels turned to right (if it makes sense).
After another few Km's, I've stopped again to check and the undulation was gone.
Initially I thought it was something related to the engine mounts...

Reads like they found the root cause and ordered a new coil. I wouldn't be too concerned about some (each person will have their own definition of "some") unevenness when cold. If rough at normal operating temperature, that's something else.

I thought this was a known issue on S550 platform, not on this one.
It does happen on S550s. The 6G site has a thread from time-to-time on a coil-related issue. But I never considered it something chronic. It's not something common.

Honestly, between this and the BCM recall, on a brand new car with these Kms... Worries me.
Ford in the US does lead in number of open recalls across their product line. But they have identified the BCM problem. You and others are covered.

Not to make excuses for Ford, but it's a new generation. The S550 experienced its own problems at start.

The coil? It's a common component. One so new shouldn't fail. But it's an easy fix.

Something to consider with any of these issues is how the matter is resolved. I recently had an issue with a seal leak on Skye. The dealer and mechanic experience were both great. Item covered under factory warranty. Issue resolved.

At the other end of the spectrum, one Toyota dealer in town sells some of the best products on the market. But their service is so horrible I wouldn't let them check the air in my tires. I'd never consider them to repair anything, even if under warranty.

Should I ask for extend the factory warranty?
I do have an extended warranty on my S550.

I don't buy vehicles often. Something which struck me after taking receipt of Skye is the density and complexity of some of these systems, especially under the hood. It's nothing Ford-specific. It's common to any modern vehicle.

Playing the odds, I thought insurance was appropriate. Maybe I'll use it someday. Maybe not. IDK. The amount I paid for coverage over the years I'll have the car, the warranty cost was quite reasonable. Someone keeping their vehicle a shorter period of time might not consider a policy. It depends.

As part of the decision process, read the Ford Warranty for your Model Year. Quite a few bits are covered up to certain milestones (engine, powertrain, emissions, corrosion, safety, etc.)

Escalate the complaint to Ford HQ?
Ford recognized the issue and ordered the parts. Each person is going to have their own level at which they call BS. In this situation, I think it's too early for that. If concerned, jot down some notes, if you need to replay anything later.

Regarding the concerns of parts shortages and availability, these problems continue to be somewhat common for all manufacturers, virtually any product. It's the unfortunate result of a global manufacturing and distribution system, coupled with Just-in-Time delivery schedules: the slightest disruption thousands of kms away can wreak havoc.

And yet OP who is in Spain has to wait for some to come from Germany.

I had a 2018 GT...2 dealers could not fix a broken front strut damper. Two dealers, six days, nothing. I did it myself in my driveway in three hours. The damper shaft was rattling in the damper assembly of the front strut; I was livid. I wrote Ford Corporate letters. They replied. It was all useless. Sold it and moved on. Granted, your issue is simple, for which Ford is fixing, but recalls and QC are Ford's well-known, public problem. In the end, selling the car is not an overreaction, IMO, but keeping it and hoping you have a good dealer is the alternative. If you cannot get to a good dealer, I'd walk away. All subjective preferences, but there is an unfortunate reality to it as well. I say all this as I ponder a new DH w the Handling Pack. I'm a glutton.

Wow. I am sorry to hear that and happy at the same time you giving it another try by buying a new one….
I too choose car by dealer ability to resolve problems. That is why I drive 300 km away from capital city I am living in away to another country for service. No Good Dealer, No Good Car.

Yeah, thanks Cipis, it did suck. Even though it was an easy fix, and I am a pretty advanced DIY owner, I just was too worried about a serious issue occurring that I could not fix...say, that 10 speed it had. They were having issues back then. Seems sorted out now though. My second brand is BMW, and I've had a good experience there, but they are so expensive, and I've long been an NA V8 guy. I love me an M2 though! I like many things, so I am not "stuck" with a Ford as an option.

Coils should be readily available, I bet if you do a application search by PN that coil is used on a lot of cars. The downtube length might not be the same but the base coil is probably almost universal. All you need is the coil right?

If any of you are wondering about misfires, and cars do misfire but it takes a certain amount to trip the C.E.L., if you know someone with a good diagnostic scanner ( I run Snap On stuff at home and in my shop in NH) you can go into Mode 6 data and look at cylinder contribution and it will show you misfire counts.

This was how I found out what 2 cylinders on my 07 GT were causing the stumble off idle, I saw 2 cylinders with higher counts than the rest and pulled the plugs from those 2. An inspection showed a small crack in the insulator that was letting spark out of the center and down to the hex on the plug which was the path of least resistance to ground.

i cannot remember when, but this has been mentioned before. maybe a year or so ago. i had, i believe during break in miles, a similar occurrence on startup. a definite rhythmic shake definitely a misfire. fortunately as the engine warmed, the miss cleared and the engine ran fine. could have been a wet or semi fouled plug. it happened only once pretty noticeable and maybe another time not as bad but not in the last year. unfortunately coils are electronic parts and do go bad. catch it early, have it replaced and I hope you enjoy your car as most of us do.
