Motorcycle Cops don't answer most calls that would require a prisoner transport with the exception of an occasional warrant return on a traffic stop. They have specific missions like school zone enforcement and various escorts from standard funeral to Presidential that could not be accomplished with a normal police vehicle. They represent a very small portion of the departments manpower. Ironically they are probably the only unit besides a Motor Carrier Unit that actually produce more revenue than they consume in taxes all while providing a service that most appreciate. Maybe its me but if someone has an issue with unmarked police cars and motorcycles then maybe they just have an issue with the enforcement of traffic laws. Its kin to saying they do not need a helicopter, boat, armored vehicle for Swat, or ATV for the beach…..

Bikes are against bikes and other small traffic that can manouver through tight areas, fast cars are against fast cars, normal cars are for normal duties and transpprt vehicles are to transport the arrested people.

I'm a minimalist so it just seems excessive to me. Everyone has different perspectives. I remodeled my whole house with a 4 door Chevy Cruze so it seems excessive TO ME. One vehicle in fact can serve multiple purposes to save money if you are skilled enough. They recently switched the whole fleet of generic patrol cars over from Impalas to Ford Explorers here. Wouldn't the Impala get better gas mileage? They were getting by just fine with a 4 door car before. Why is it suddenly unacceptable? Maybe everyone one of them is carrying a lot more gear than they were 2 years ago and they all need gas guzzling SUVs now. I highly doubt it. Maybe they were offered a better deal on SUVs this go around. Who knows. It just seems like our tax dollar could be stretched better where I live.

Most localities buy based on purchase agreements and they vary from manufacture to manufacture after the bid process. The Tahoe was actually cheaper to but than the Impala but then the demand pushed its price higher, and then the Impala went bye bye. The Tahoe does everything very well. That Impala got horrible gas mileage but sure was fun to drive reminded me a little of the Caprice from 1995/1996

Idaho actually has 10 of the Mustangs. I know the tech at ISP who sets them up. These are Pursuit Vehicles and for traffic control. In nearly any pursuit there will be other vehicles involved in the pursuit that can handle the transport of the felons. As far as Motor Officers they primarily work in the city/urban areas. Their primary job is traffic control and special assignments like controlling traffic at air shows etc. I have a nephew who is a Motor Officer. Always thought that would be the be job possible. Now I am thinking driving a new Mustang may be the next best job.

Rember the Pursuit Vehicle in the Mad Max movie....I've run across a few cities, counties and states that have Pursuit Vehicles, many being mustangs. We had one in my county years ago, a Fox Body 5.0 Mustang, was seized from a drug raid. It was used primarily as hi-way enforcement fast as hell too.

I always thought that from the doors on back it looked a lot like a 70-71 Ford Torino.
