I'm getting mixed answers too. I've only factory ordered a vehicle once in my life and that was my 2024 Ecoboost. I did so by going to the dealer and using the configurator on Ford's website. And as of this writing the configurator for the 2026 isn't available yet.So no.... No one so far?
Order banks won't open until July 21st, first run production scheduled for first week of NovemberSo no.... No one so far?
These are great tips when ordering. I would add that when your order gets scheduled for a production date is when you receive a vin number. They start scheduling this week (Thursday) for production dates in September. Usually deliveries can happen 4 weeks after it's produced but Ford does quality hold for about 4-6 weeks before shipping it early builds. So November is a good guys for deliveries of the first Mustangs.Yes, order banks for the 2026 Mustang are open. I placed an order on June 25, 2025. Dealer stated that they have my order confirmed and provided me with an order number. Next step is for Ford to begin scheduling, which should be starting on July 21st. From there, I should see the VIN sometime in August, which I can then use to track (along with the order number) via the Ford website.
After placing the order, I checked with 2 other Ford dealers in Colorado. Very much a "trust but verify" kind of thing. On that trip, those dealers were very clear that the order banks are open for 2026 models and they are able to take custom orders.
Side note: every dealer seems to have a dedicated person who inputs the orders to Ford - from what I can tell, regular sales people have read access into the system so they can check status, but they can't create new orders. I would recommend speaking with a sales manager in addition to working with a sales person, and also inquire who on the team can actually place the order into the system. (Doesn't hurt to meet that person and shake their hand while you're at it and start the that business relationship on a good note.)
If you decide to custom order, make sure you get a copy of the dealer order receipt so you have the order number and the correct configuation in writing. On that, a few points worth keeping in mind:
For what it's worth, you have time to decide. Ford's latest supplier agreements have stabilized and the 2025 model year proved to be quite smooth overall for build timing and quality. If you decide to order a 2026 Mustang, I think you're really going to like it.
- Confirmation: the order receipt is confirmation that the dealer has sent the order to Ford, not confirmation Ford has accepted the order. Ford needs to do a fair bit in the background before they confirm (to the dealer) that the order is valid. A good rule to go by is that, once you have a VIN, then you know the car has been accepted and will be built.
- The order number is half the of the equation to track status. The other half is the VIN: you should get an email when the VIN is generated. However, the dealer can look it up for you; you'll need to wait about 4 weeks from the order date at the minimum before checking-in with your dealer.
- With the Order Number and VIN in hand, you can check status directly on Ford's website: https://www.ford.com/myaccount/vehicle-order-tracking
- Timing: based on my last two custom order experiences, if you order in June or July, the car should be ready for pickup at your dealer sometime in late October to mid November. Generally custom Mustang orders take about 4 months, give or take about 3 weeks.
