So I’m looking at adding the Ford Motorsport AOS to my new Mustang GT as soon as she gets out of Stop Sale Jail…

But I’m confused.

The AOS that I had on my previous car (‘24 WRX tR) was from IAG, and it required no maintenance whatsoever.

The oil vapor captured drained back into the crank case, and it even had coolant running through it for winter issues.

However, when I look at the description of the AOS for Ford Motorsport, it states the following, which if true sounds like a traditional catch can, not a true Air/Oil Separator. Am I just missing something or …???

  • Canister is easy to drain by removing PCV lines off canister, removing canister and draining oil

^ that is correct, unfortunately the can actually catches and requires periodic maintenance

In the Coyote Mustang, on the passenger side, the existing PCV valve-to-intake tubing will be removed. In its place, a catch can and hoses will then complete the connection.

The Ford can does not have a drain back valve to the engine, or a drain valve, like a oil pan. The Ford unit must be removed and emptied. Or, the top can be removed, the contents syphoned out.

For those considering J&L cans, they have a reservoir that can be removed by hand, then emptied. The filter and tubing assembly remains in-place.

To the Ford unit, many appreciate the overall design and how it secures to the engine.

To the J&L device, it's easier to check and empty.

I haven't studied other vendors and their designs.

FP catch can for the s650 is not self draining. The one for the GT500 is "No emptying required as the separator features an oil drain back into the RH coil cover of the engine ."

thanks.

I guess I’m just confused why they wouldn’t design them to all drain back into the engine.

IAG is going to work with me to adapt theirs to mine- if I’m so inclined.

not so sure I’m going to take them up on it. May just go with Ford Performance and empty it a couple times a year.

You really don't want that stuff draining back... originally it would just be burned off, barring that, better to get it out of there.
