it's quite a far fetched title, but it's something that my cousin noticed while giving my s650 a spin, and he noticed it since he used to own an e46 m3, which had the m clunk.

i'm sure you guys are aware of the m clunk considering this forum has people that know a little bit about everything, but the m clunk as far as i know, and how he described it, is a knocking or what you think the "clunk" sound is that comes from the rear, sort of where the differential is and it happens when you push in the clutch and/or changing gears. from what i was told, it's something that's completely normal and happens with m cars with manuals, and there's nothing to be afraid of.

for the mt82, this only happens when clutching in while in 1st gear. it does not happen in any other gear, and it does not happen when starting in 1st, only when it's moving and in 1st gear. the issue happens everytime past 2k rpms, and below that the sound is not there. it happens every single time when going downhill, and on even ground/uphill it happens if i push in the clutch a little too quickly, and sometimes even pushing it in normally creates that clunk noise. as far as i'm aware, there is no feeling of this clunk in the clutch pedal, at least not that much feeling, and the clunk specifically happens pretty much exactly when i push in the clutch, right above/pretty high up on the bite point of the clutch. this issue has happened since i've owned the car at 3k miles, and i now have 10k miles and there doesn't seem to be any difference with the car and clutch.

i thought of test driving a manual mustang at a dealership to see if this issue happens with other cars, but i haven't gotten the opportunity to. if you have no clue what i'm talking about, i can provide a video of this sound, not that it gives a good diagnosis but it is quite an awful sound to hear and does sound like its harming something in my car despite being told that it's completely normal.

so, for you guys who also own manual mustangs, specifically the mt82, is this something you guys notice too? should i be worried? is this causing significant damage to the clutch/transmission?

I have heard that before but is very sporadic and subtle. (Almost like a subwoofer waking up with aftermarket audio). I've also had that in BMW's too.

I've even driven it barefoot to to try and see if is negative clutch feedback but is none there

There’s a pretty good rear end clunk in many dark horse Mustangs automatics with the handling package. It occurs at around 1500 RPMs, under normal acceleration from a stop or normal, breaking to a stop. There have been some recommendations for possible remedies, but so far, the clunks remain!

May DH auto is in the shop. They took it apart and said there is a bearing fault in the rear differential. Its been in the shop for a week for diagnosis and part is backordered until mid may.

that sucks. i've heard that the 10r80 does have some reliability issues but i wouldn't know if the 10r80's issues would be the same with the mt82. i'm going to go to my local dealer to get it serviced anyways so i might see if there's something up.

Take the center console off along with the rubber cabin isolation boot and take a listen. MT-82's are rather loud and clunky transmissions.

If its coming from the rear, it could be the propshaft bracing back and forth. The fix would be a single piece shaft.

Chances are, its nothing really.

Mine make that clunk as well its clutch slop. It tends to happen when the transmission get warm and the brakes are warm. I bet if you put the kit to give the transmission its own reservoir it would improve. Eventually going to just swap to a stage 2 calimer and short shifter with separate reservoir.

Yes, (sometimes) a manual transmission vehicle thunk when shifting to first after coming to a stop, rumor is double-clutch first will result in no thunk.

That cluck is from the two piece driveshaft when shifting at low speeds and clutch and shift timing is off. Get a one piece and 95% clunck will be gone. Shaftmasters for the win.
