Just curious if anyone here has driven or owned one of the 2 Series BMW's with the straight 6, M2 or M240i ?
Watched a Raiti's rides youtube video last night on his M2 review and he liked it and compared it to the Dark Horse, about the same price and he did say the Dark Horse tremec was better for the manual shifter. think I would miss the sound of the V8 though, the 6 cylinder did have a lots of pops and bangs when letting off the throttle. thanks! also do you all think the M2 is worth the extra money over the M240i ?

Generic answers:

Mustang has teh TreMeC
"keep your 6 cylinder I want a V8"
"I'd rather have NA power"
Something about 'murica

They are badass cars. Personally, blowing one of those things up would be big $, and I'd trust the Mustang to make it to 100k (even beating the fuck out of it and boosting it) more than the BMW if you're buying it to keep for a while. Cheaper to repair and maintain.

I test drove 2 manual M2’s as I contemplated whether or not that was the direction I wanted to go after 10 years of s550’s. 15gt manual and 21 Mach 1 auto.
Ended up with a new 24 manual Dark Horse premium 3 months ago and $4k under msrp.
I am very happy with my choice.
The M2 was nice but boring , no visceral feel.
The manual was no where near the Tremec feel, it was soft and rubbery.
I also like the looks of the DH better and when I thought about overall cost of maintenance the answer was easy.
Interior of new premium DH is very much on par with M2

Yeah I saw the M2 has lots more hp than than the M240i after more research, I think the M2 is around 10k more expensive than the M240i also, probably worth it. & yeah would probably not want to keep a BMW when the warranty is up if repair costs are higher.

M2 is an exceptionally well rounded car to drive.

Theres a boost threshold (not lag) that can be annoying, but once you're on boost they're real nippy.

The M2 also hides its weight very well when pushing around corners.

What kills the car for me, personally, is the lethargic clutch return, typically BMW shifter feel, long term reliability, silly styling, and the aforementioned boost threshold.

From what I read this boost issue is more apparent on the manual.
Most reviews say the auto is more suited for the engine

This only applies when flooring it through gears.

When nailing it out of a decel, coming out of a corner, etc, its still an issue to me regardless of transmission. It can make getting sideways a little annoying too. You have to anticipate that the delivery of power is not instant when nailing the throttle. once you're sideways its an incredibly controllable car, but its just a nuisance, if that makes sense.

I have driven both, the B58 engine in the 240 is exceptional, cheap, reliable, easy to tune and can generate around 460hp with ease (stage 1) at the wheels. Much cheaper than a M2...

However, the M2 is much more of a race/track car than the 240i. The S58 can be tuned to around 700hp with relative ease and has better everything, cooling, brakes, aero and all that. However, it's pretty stiff for an average joyride and less suited as a daily.

Both have vastly superior (build) quality over the Mustang though. Nicer materials, better paint jobs, less gaps etc.

Nonetheless, both cars are significantly smaller than a Mustang but not that much lighter. If BMW wouldn't have priced the M3/4 out of orbit they would be the fitting equivalent.

Long story short, test drive the cars. The M240i is the best bang for buck but doesn't come with a manual.
The M2 is just a beefier and more expensive M240i. Both cars are too small for my liking. The seats are much! smaller that in the 3 series although it's the same seat (not the bucket) on paper.

The Dark Horse is the most fun car if it's used as a daily and would be my choice if I had to choose between the three. MT, V8 would be my deciding factors.

All above accounts for the German/EU versions of said cars.
