Anyone try to fit 265/285 width tires on stock GT performance pack wheels? (Comes with 255F/275R width) if so, what did it look like and how did the car handle?

When it’s time to replace tires thinking of moving from the Pirelli P Zero 255/275 to Michelin Pilot Sport 4S 265/285. Wanted to see if anyone tried it and if it does crazy stuff to the stability control system.
So in the test, a 225 track tire was marginally faster on a 9 inch wheel than a 245. On an 8 inch wheel, it was no contest. The 225 was way faster.

I am just providing information to help you make a decision. Stuffing even more tire on the same wheel is not only not always better, but it is probably counterproductive in most cases.

Your wheels are 9" in the front and 9.5" in the rear and you are wanting to stuff 265/285 tires on them. So for your case, you are taking that same size 9" wheel from the test, and using not a 225 (the fastest), nor a 245, which degraded performance slightly as compared to a 225, but you are proposing to go even further in the wrong direction and stuff a 265 on the same size 9" wheel. It will degrade performance further. Watch the video and decide carefully.

Just looking for a little extra grip without having to pay for a new set of wheels. If cost were no option I’d probably get 305 width tires for the rear. I think that tire width would match the power and gearing well.
This is your goal, a little extra grip. You may be doing the opposite.

If you really want wider tires, like a 305, buy 11 inch wheels.

Remember that the guys marketing tires and wheels here on the site are mainly in the market for looks. How does this look? Fill the wheel wells. Oh, that looks great.

They are not out there beating on their wheel and tire combos on the track and saying, here is what gives your Mustang more grip.

Looks or performance? They are not always the same.

Thank you for the data. Logically having more contact patch should increase cornering and acceleration grip but perhaps if the tire is not sitting right on the wheel the benefits of the extra width are negated.

Moving to a PS4S of the same stock size might be the best grip that can be had with the stock wheels. For street driving anyway…

PS4S are great tires and grippy for a regular road type tire, and they will perform well in the winter if you do not live somewhere very cold (ugh, scratch that, I just saw you live in New York - you probably need a winter tire!)

If you really want best grip, though, Michelin Cup 2 are a "street" tire.

And if you really want "best grip" then Cup 2 R will deliver, but they will not last very long.

And there are 200 tread wear type tires will probably come in sizes that will fit your wheels.

and more . . .

And then there are actual racing slicks.

What kind of mileage can one expect from a cup 2 tire with just spirited commuter driving?

I don’t drive the car if it gets 20 F or below. Stays in the garage to avoid tire cracking. I don’t mind if a tire gets slippery in the cold I just adjust my driving and keep the traction control on when it gets below 40 F. I’ve driven most of my sports cars year round so am quite used to it (used to live in Maine even)

the cup 2 R would be a bit much for me I am thinking lol.

if you commute, or drive in cold weather and dont need a snow, then look at the PS4 AS (all season) the PS4 summer isnt reccomended to drive on under 7 C, the rubber isnt meant to flex when cold and can crack prematurly.

theyll also last 2-3 times as long, and in a 305 still have plenty of traction, they also wont sandblast your paint like sticky tires will. But if you track then cup2 is good, PS4 is amazing, just wont last commuting and again, picks up alot of gravel

the PS4 summer isnt reccomended to drive on under 7 C, the rubber isn't meant to flex when cold and can crack prematurely.
That's negative seven Celsius, -7°, not 7. Big difference.

Note: Tires exposed to temperatures of 20 degrees F (-7 degrees C) or lower must be permitted to gradually return to temperatures of at least 40 degrees F (5 degrees C) for at least 24 hours before they are flexed in any manner, such as by adjusting inflation pressures, mounting them on wheels or using them to support, roll or drive a vehicle.

Flexing of the specialized rubber compounds used in Max Performance Summer tires during cold-weather use can result in irreversible compound cracking. Compound cracking is not a warrantable condition because it occurs as the result of improper use or storage, tires exhibiting compound cracking must be replaced.

Plenty of us here have driven 4S tires in the 30s with no problems at all.

I agree that the all seasons would be better for winter in New York, but I drove my 4S year round in Georgia, regardless of temperature (but I did not know about this warning until recently). I am nearly 100% certain I drove them on cold days in the 20s with no issues with cracking.

Cup 2R tires are track focused, but they come on some BMW as original equipment, or so I learned watching a tire review on Youtube over the weekend.

Cup 2 tires come in different flavors. There is a 240 tread wear version, which has slightly more tread depth and sits between the 200 tread wear track focused tires and the 300 tread wear 4S, and there is a 180 tread wear version, which has less tread depth and is obviously more track focused, but nowhere near so much as the Cup 2 R. Cup 2 tires are significantly more expensive than 4S tires, as well.

The Michelin Pilot Sport 4S is a summer tire and should not be driven when the temperature is
below 40°F (7°C), as the rubber compound hardens, drastically reducing traction and increasing the risk of cracking. Driving below this temperature, especially in cold, wet, or icy conditions, is unsafe. A minimum of 40°F is recommended for driving,

If one stays with the manufacturers tire and wheel width specs you should be good. Never go outside of that as handling/tire wear will result. In the past I have always gone up one size with zero issues. Ford as well as other manufacturers will put the middle size tires vs rims to save $. Cheap and none performance tires do not apply.

I think you are confusing Pilot Sport 4s with Pilot Sport All Season 4s. Two different tires.

thats what I am assuming as well, I am running the PS4 AS (all season) so i can run them into november and early in the year come march/april if the salt is gone. In theory i can drive those in the snow but a 305 on ontario roads in an AS would suck, the PS 4s (isnt 4 season) is summer only, turn into hockey pucks when they get near freezing temps and flexing that hard rubber will crack it and ruins them prematurly

my ct5v came with the PS 4s and dealer said they same, they wouldnt even let me pick it up on a day that ws 2-3C , they incisted on installing my snows or waiting till the following week when it was warmer.

You can store inflated PS4s in the cold on their side but not flext/run them until theyve had 24 hours to come back above freezing temps (ideally 7c or up) , most summer compounds have some literature on sub zero temps somewhere

good video on the pair here,

good video on the pair here,
I honestly have no clue why the two of you posted this, or why you think this confusion for all seasons is the case.

I posted the quote, in boldface type, but, more importantly, I provided a link in my post. Click it, and you will see that it is not an all season tire. wesg79 can even compare the tread in the picture to the video comparison he posted.

(1) Google

(2) Chat GTP

(3) Forum discussion.

Not one of those is a reliable source, and they all feed off of each other.

Dig deeper. I often find the first returns from Google are wrong, as Google searches are now AI driven. AI literally scours the internet and "creates" returns based on what it finds, right or wrong. Then folks post the AI creation on discussion forums. This creates more AI search returns in a vicious cycle.

I have seen posts here, which are flatly wrong, create AI search returns that are just as wrong. If I relied on the AI search return and posted the result, that would just increase the likelihood of that wrong concept becoming the dominant AI search return on that subject, but it is based on nothingness.

For a source, you need something reliable, e.g., from Michelin.

Beware of AI returns. They can sometimes point you in the right direction, but you have to follow the direction and see if there is anything to it. Often, there is not - just some speculation posted somewhere by somebody who does not know. AI picks that up and internalizes it and uses it to generate a response regardless of whether it is reliable or accurate.
