Welcome to my write up I have done. I see plenty asking about adding active exhaust, or regretting not adding it. I have confirmed most of this is also going to be mostly same for 2019+ mustangs, sadly not the 2018.
The wire harness going back into the trunk is the same on the cars between non AE cars, and AE cars. All of the features are turned off in your tune for non-AE cars, and turned off in all the modules related to center screen.
You'll need these parts
(2019+ ae parts that are different
1*JR3Z-14A411-J wiring harness (Y harness)
2*JR3Z-14A411-H wiring harnesses (from Y to actuator)
2* JR3Z-6554-A Exhaust Valve Actuator)
1x AE mufflers - bought used 150$ for both from marketplace.
2x PR3Z-14A411-A, Actuator harness, 53$ msrp new
2x PR3Z-5K245-B, (PR3Z-5K245-A -this was replaced by xx245-B) Exhaust valve actuator,
msrp around 100$ each,
(135-170$ on ebay each on ebay) I got mine used off marketplace 170$ for both.
2x JR3Z-9449-A Actuator Spring, these usually come with the actuators, but if it doesnt, you need these.
1x PR3Z-14A411-C, Y-wire harness that connects to car harness and evap, new for 56$
2x Heat shields for actuator, 22$ a piece, Ebay. sometimes the actuators may have these with them already. not really a part number, but bmw and some other manufacturers use the same heatshield. Easy enough to find.
6x M6 nuts to mount actuators, if they dont come with it.
OBDII to usb chord, use forscans website for guidance on the correct one. I used a different one and that cost me 30 bucks. Forscan is free to use.
I included what I paid for all the components, and my overall costs. I did not include my tune device, a MPVI4, and credits, because most people will already have a tuner, or plan to get one anyways if you are modding your car.
My costs all together was 543, and I just had a buddy weld them on for me.
alot of this stuff is readily found on either ebay, fb marketplace, or ford directly.
For Forscan you have to change settings under three module APIM, IPC, ACM
Instrument Panel Control (IPC)
720-06-01 xxxx xxxx x*--
Selectable Drive Mode (SDM) • Dual Exhausts (DE) • Exhaust Mode Button (EMB) • Eco Mode RTT (EMRTT) (EMB=Exhaust mode selection in the centerstack)
720-10-01 *xxx xxxx xx--
Transmission Temperature Curve (TTC) • Tunable Exhausts (TE) • Cross Traffic Message (CTM)
Accessory Protocol Interface Module(APIM) (SYNC)
7D0-09-03 xxxx xxx* xx--
Drive Control Menu (DCM) • Tunable Exhausts (TE) • Engine Rev Match (ERM)
7D0-09-05 xxxx xxx xx-- • Quiet Time Exhaust Mode
727-01-03 xxxx xxxx x-- Audio Control Module(ACM) • Active Exhaust Signal (AES)
I think I got everything here, basically anything related to active exhaust I turned on,
Then, ECU/PCM needs to be updated to enable AE install tune. Once in vcm suite, simply enable Active exhaust and other functions, or your tuner can do this. Takes seconds to do, and no need to change anything else on stock tune.
If after installing you get a feature is unavailable pops up in the center console, you either installed the spring that is connected to the actuator wrong, which will cause a error. Getting the spring installed correctly is a pita, and nothing online really about it. mine threw errors till I got it lined up properly with the flap. The system also needs time to calibrate itself.
assembly is get mufflers welded on, attach y-harness in the trunk, it is at the back with the spare tire, push through the trunk, and disconnect from evap plug. for s650 will need to remove a panel piece on the bottom to access most of it comfortably. attach y harness to car harness, evap plug, and the two wires going to the actuator harness, run along a flat section, and have two points they mount too. theres a longer section going too the passenger side. Actuator harness goes to the actuator, which attaches to the heat shield, and spring on the other end. 3x M6 nuts hold it together. Now all attached, open forscan, make changes in APIM, IPC, ACM, and then turn on active exhaust settings in the tune.
my inspiration for this was, I wanted quad tip exhaust. Single tip looks weird imo. Picked up two active exhaust mufflers for 150, and I got to thinking from there.
Pretend I am talking in the videos, cus I plan to eventually dub audio on the videos and to a full video walkthrough.
First video, shows the Y harness location, disconnecting it.
second shows the y harness, and actuator harnesses connected to the actuators,
3rd shows everything connected together from under the car.
thank you
