I really like that ford does this by software. Price is pretty fair considering you get a "warranty" which is more than you'd get from most of the aftermarket.

Good bump in torque where you're going to notice it most, almost enough horsepower that it'll feel faster for the $850 spent.

BMW seems to have dropped this? They used to have the MPPK/MPPSK. Don't think Audi offers anything like this, nor Chevy, Dodge, Subaru (lol), Whomever else still makes sports cars. Yes I know lots of these manufacturers offer the competition trim, or the + variant, or JAILBREAK WIDEBODY EXTREME REDEYE BROUGHT TO YOU BY CARLS JR Edition.

Volvo has their polestar tunes which are dealer friendly and get a warranty without being absolutely outrageous in cost.

Not sure ford sells a ton of these upgrades, but its nice to have the option. Just like it'd be nice to have the option for a 6 speed on the ecoboost.

ecoboost darkhorse when!

Could you do this yourself? Would you lose your Ford engine warranty if you install it yourself? Seems like it would be hard to justify that under Magnusson Moss, especially since it's their product and not like you're able to tweak it to be your own custom tune.

Also, if Ford knows the engine is reliably capable (and emissions compliant) at this power level, why isn't it just standard? To do otherwise is to intentionally cripple the base engine, no?

I imagine it's to sell to a wider audience who doesn't understand different octane ratings, or believes anything higher than 87 is just a "ploy by BIG OIL(tm)" to get you to spend more money.

The Mustang as a whole, regardless of trim or engine, should really be running on 93 all the time, but they can all operate just fine on 87. Ford markets them as such. Take away that, and I imagine a good number of would-be buyers are going to turn away. Worse, there may still be people who would buy with the understanding that the car requires an octane higher than 87 and use the wrong fuel anyway, and then when the car grenades they blame it on Ford, and reputation tanks, ultimately leading to a massive sales drop.

Basically, I think they're trying to idiot-proof this car as much as possible to reduce the barrier to entry, because unfortunately not wanting to/believing in buying 93 would be a reason someone doesn't buy a car.

Well, the Ecoboost RTR has some DH parts on it... does that count?

BMW has offloaded this all to Dinan, 3rd party but you still get the warranty if Dinan or the dealer installs it

The tune is unlikely to be purchased by a 28 year old female who thought the color on the Ecoboost Mustang was "cute" and does not even know how to check the oil level.

The Mustang itself is very likely to be purchased by such a person.

Our S550 is actually the wife's' daily driver... I slipped a FP tune on it without telling her! She isn't a big car person, but she noticed it right away... her: "what did you do to my car?" me: "more power RRr!" Oh, and color was the deciding factor on that car... Royal Crimson... we both fell in love with it.

I just tried to call my dealership, and I will probably do it myself. They have been passing hand to hand, and no one knows anything. Not surprised since getting a touch-up pen from them is an “special order.”

If you don't want to deal with a dealership clown show and still want a warranty... any ASE certified shop can install it and maintain the warranty.

Yup, that's my point. I was primarily responding to the part of, "Why is this not standard?"
