I decided last week to order a new BMW M3, and so I started researching what kind of prices I could expect on trade for my Mustang Dark Horse. Dealers were low 50s, those greedy little buggers (granted, there are unsold new ones on the lot, so who can blame them?) but Carvana came through with $57,200. My 2025 had a mere 3200 miles on it, but many of those were on the track so the tires were a bit toasted, the brakes quite well worn, I drilled a hole in the front for my fancy tow hook (now up for sale in the classifieds section) and it was very dirty (I did a track day the day before they picked it up). You may think $57,200 isn't great, but this was a base car, no options, and I paid but $58K for it used (w/400 miles) so I think I did OK.

Carvana also bought my S550 GT - I made profit on that one thanks to Covid, and also bought my ugly yellow GT convertible in the middle of winter for thousands more than the dealer would give me. Because manual transmission. And yellow.

It's tough selling expensive 1 year-old cars to individuals, what with financing and whatnot where dealers have a real advantage. Not to mention the hassle and risks as a seller.

I had to hook up my Forscan to undo the collision disable, and today Windows decided that it was too much of a risk! So I had to go disable all of that security crap to get it working. I was sweating a bit, as they wouldn't have accepted the car if it had warnings and failures on the dash. Fortunately I got it done in time, cleaned all of my crap out of the car, and it was a painless, easy transaction. For a mere $40 they'll come pick it up, and that was well worth it since their store is 45 minutes from me and the last time I did, they farted around for a couple of hours and just annoyed the crap out of me. And I had to Uber home, and I hate Uber. And Lyft.

So, hey guys and gals, thanks for the fish! Check out the classifieds if you want to buy my DH car cover, spare tire or the tow hook. I shall remain here as an occasional lurker/commenter if that's OK.

Thats a pretty good offer. I looked mine up on Carvana just yesterday. MSRP on my GT Premium was 61k six months ago. They offered me 44k. You made a good move getting that Dark Horse.

Selling to Carmax/Carvana is the superior option in many cases.

They often pay more than dealers, and you don't have to deal with tirekickers (or worse) coming to your house, knowing where you live, driving your car, taking up your time, etc.

Depending on your lifestyle, income, how much you value your privacy, it's easily worth it to sell to Carmax/Carvana even if you miss out on a few grand. And that's not even always true, I recently got private party+ for my '25 GT. Carmax even paid for my Lyft home to another city.

Carvana has some type of internal financial shenanigans though, some kind of circular self-dealing internal lending scam allegedly. You can look it up, it goes deep. But heck that's not my problem, if they want to pay better prices for my used cars, so be it.

Carvana was going to sell me a perfect 2023 S550 GT. Silver with 2200 miles. I did the deal online, went to the store to get it. Car was awesome, except the entire passenger side was HORRIBLY resprayed. Overspray on ever single moulding and the interior was clearly chain smoked in. Needless to say I didnt take delivery. And I had to fight tooth and nail to get my deposit back. Escalations to their corporate hq a few times. No thanks.

No thanks.
Yeah, after having done this three times and seeing how they "inspect" a car before taking it, I have no issue selling to them but there's no way I'd buy a car from them.

The business model doesn't really make sense, but many other companies play similar games leveraging the real estate that the stores are on (for example) rather than actually making money by selling stuff.

As a seller, I don't care. As I noted above, I'd never buy from them. Heck, they lost their license here in NC for a while for titling issues.

I found my car on carvana, it was being "prepared" last week. Today it's marked as sale pending. Wow. They didn't even bother to replace the tow hook cover (I had drilled it out for my tow hook) with the correct color part... but someone bought it anyway.

$66K, about $500 UNDER MSRP. Geez, do people not shop? Surely you could find a new one, somewhere....

I've got no issue with them making a profit, I did OK and it's a good car, so the buyer will be happy. I'm just amazed, sometimes.

I bought 3 vehicles through them, my first car a 2014 Fusion, my current truck a 1500 ram, and am in the middle of buying a new truck from them (with the current as trade) a 2015 F250 Platinum. Their cars are by no means perfect, but I've had no serious issues that couldnt be resolved by sinple fixes (1500 had a small power draidrain due to one loose connector pin.) or me not giving a shit about resale value (all 3 vics had rock chips or paint repair somewhere.)

If you go in with low expectations and know what to look for from a PPI then there's no more risk than buying one at a used dealer lot.
