$ amount asked has nothing to do with the type of car.

A Raptor Truck is expensive. Nobody is comparing it to a similarly priced Porsche.

The mid engine sports car design is superior, as is the Porsche rear engine layout. A Mustang is not designed to be like those cars. There will be a market for very high performance Mustangs, however, like this car, which some who have the funds may not even be able to get, and the GTD, which is not sitting around unsold.

It is a car with a market. Ford figured all of that out with marketing teams long before the concept got the green light.

It won't sell any less because the ZR1 beats it. The ZR1 beats pretty much all the other cars out there, too, but the other cars still sell.

No one, except Jay Leno types will pay $170K for a PoorBoy mustang trying to be a BigBoy car. Ford keeps falling flat on their faces trying to keep up with GM - sad really :frown:

This is a trial balloon to measure just how much outrage the comically high asking prices are
can't say i agree 100%, but i do feel like this follows the same avenue as the influencer reveal they set up for everyone to see, like, follow, comment. somebody has to pay for those hotel rooms, press room, lunches. that was the first step. now the leak. then official pricing. but people will pay because production is limited. kinda smart on ford because they can probably get what they want, pay for those YouTubers, let dealers get away with murder, all while creating publicity and excitement about the dark horse name. it will be interesting to see what this does to used gt500 and NA dark horse sales, but the more it plays out, the more comfortable i am just keeping mine as long as possible.

When Ford decided to charge the dealer $5000 for 1 allocation, they insured that almost every dealer would charge at least a $5000 ADM just to recover their cost. Thank you Ford.

Only they could sell the car at invoice and still make money even with the 5000 dollar entry fee.

Yeah, I know it's early, but I think there is a lot more to it than smacking a Whipple on top of the engine and jacking up the price.

When "Top Gear" and all the other automotive journalists start running laps on road courses, the last thing they are going to want is for the car to go into limp mode a few minutes in.

Which is, by the way, what would happen to those of you who simply buy a Whipple and hit the road course. First, the tuning will pull so much timing a few minutes in that naturally aspirated Mustangs will be accelerating harder than you on the straights, and then the car will go into limp mode to protect the engine.
The catalytic converters also will overheat…

That may be true, I don't know for a fact that they could. Even if they could, what are the chances they would?

The predators run larger 2-3/4” cats and exhaust piping.
Much stronger honeycomb construction as well.

not a problem for 1kwhp or so.
good to know. - again, I'm asking here:
any insight into how much the GT500 predator guys / gals have wicked it up and the cats have held? I understand they work on a stock tune, but are some of them going to far? Or are these kind of the bees knees?

My good friend is on a 2.6 pulley, ID1300s and E85 tune for almost 60k miles… it’s definitely in the 900 wheel range, he’s got a group of GT500 guys also, most do have off road headers, and a few with 3.8 whipples in the low 1200 whp range.
All stock trans btw, all no issues afaik.

Attached are two photos of cats, comparing the F150's to the GT500's.

In the GT500, the surface area is more porous, less-restrictive and more free-flowing.

Edit,

In the aftermarket arena and using a different design, G-Sport sells cats rated at up to 1,200 HP.

I wonder why nobody is using these when upgrading GT Mustangs with turbos or superchargers?

Also, GESI makes these aftermarket cats it advertises for high performance.

Note the GT500 photos for marketing . . .

And here are their cats:
https://www.gsportbygesi.com/g-sport-emissions-systems-products

They have inlet outlet diameters from 2.5" up to 4" with several different cell counts and a few different interior structures. They also carry different horsepower ratings, 500 hp, 850, 1000, and 1200. Note that the 1200 hp rating is per cat, meaning per exhaust bank, 1200 hp from the 4 cylinders on the passenger side, and the same for the four cylinders exhausting on the driver's side.

Yikes, $750 !!! Is that per cat?
