Never in my life have I had a chipped windshield! This happened randomly tonight on the freeway with no truck or construction vehicle in front of me. It's about the size of a penny.

Going to try to go through Safelite, but if it's still visible I may replace through Ford.

Thoughts on going through insurance? The repair will be free but I will have to pay the $500 for a replacement and I would only replace OEM through Ford. I'm worried that my premium will go up now that Id have a claim on my record.

A comprehensive claim SHOULD not impact your premium. Colorado is really bad for windshield chips/cracks! I just got my first paint chip on the top of my front fender today. Comes with the enjoyment of driving it a lot!

Find a good independent installer with many years experience. Your camera will need recalibration. Not a big deal. Most independent installers contract that out as the equipment cost 6k and results sent to a database. Calibration requires a short drive and only takes five minutes on a Mustang. Safelite is a training ground and you may end up with who knows who. Don't just let anyone work on your car. This probably wont be the last windshield for this car. Its good to have a good rapport with an installer.

I’ve gotten chips like this on my F-150 and my Bronco. I did those self repair kits that are like $20. I was fortunate enough that it repaired it to like 95% good as new so I didn’t bother replacing. You could always try that first, and if it doesn’t work then go through insurance

This is very true. That said, odds are you'll be fine.

Keep in mind that if you "take it Ford" they will just call Safelite.

And, as noted, a windshield claim should not affect your premiums.

I had a worse scenario happen when I lived in Littleton Colorado. My brand-new Mercury Mystic (one day into ownership!) got hit from a rather large rock rolling down a foothill next to the I470. It hit the hood, crashed almost through the windshield damaging the top of the dash. It was an Oh s___ moment! The repair took 3 weeks, and cost the insurance over $2,500 to fix! Count yourself lucky!

I had to replace the windshield twice on my 2019 when a rock hit on the edge and cracked all the way across (first one happened the first week I had the car!) and it didn't affect my rates. And already had to replace the windshield on the 2024 when I washed it and noticed a crack on the passenger side, low, that I couldn't see sitting in the driver seat. No idea when that happened. Again, no affect on my insurance rates.

If it is in your direct field of view, they will most likely have you replace it.
If not, then most insurance will have it repaired first; and if it doesn’t hold, then it gets replaced. The cost of the repair is subtracted from the replacement.
They usually don’t stock Ford windshields, so you have to tell them that is what you want and they will order one.
In the old days you could have as many comprehensive claims as you needed and it didn’t effect anything. They still won’t directly impact cost, but they do keep track of them. If you have too many claims, then they could drop you. How many is too many? No idea. Your insurance agent should be able to help with that, If it was me, I’d go through insurance, that is why I have it. While your comprehensive deductible is $500, check on your glass coverage. I have a comprehensive deductible, but full glass coverage; so a windshield is free.

Call around to local dealers, especially high end car dealers, and ask them who they use for glass replacement. That's what I did and the same name kept coming up so I went with a local family business who has been in business for many years. They did a perfect job with Ford OEM glass windshield. Calibrated camera etc.

If it makes you feel better, I bought this car and not even 2 weeks later a deer ran out in front and destroyed my bumper. replaced the bumper out of pocket then a rock split my windshield 2 days after putting the bumper on 🤣

I pulled up to an elderly bloodied couple on the side of the road. The deer had jumped or bounced to the windshield. Their faces were cut from glass shrapnel from windshield. I later found out i can tint the windshield on the inside. SOLD! Its clear and keeps interior cooler. Lessens the sun in your eyes, but most importantly it holds the glass bits n bobbs.

I had to replace rear glass in 2020 Explorer ST. Defroster wire coating peeling off & not defrosting. Not covered by Ford Premium Extended Warranty. Dealer wanted $1200. Safelite did it for $600. While problem solving, found OEM glass on EBay for $300. Just info & options for future considerations

I've had a few experiences with safelite and they were all bad.
1) tried to schedule replacement for the wife. 3 --MONTH-- backlog. went local.
2) tried to schedule for my Raptor. called, confirmed they had the windshield, showed up and guess what? They didn't. went local.
3) the last time, Raptor again, this time they did have the glass, so I got a 9am appointment. I came by at 3PM to find they hadn't even moved my truck. After some cajoling, they move me in front of the people who "just showed up". about 5PM they come out and tell me I'll have to pick up the truck tomorrow. Their calibration camera calibration machine was down. After some discussion they reevaluate and miraculously, now their calibration machine does work. Finally about 5:45 I'm on my way.
It was not as simple as that, and like I said, will be the last time.

Local businesses tend to now want to disappoint customers.

I had to replace the windshields in my Subaru Outback and my 2022 Mustang. Unfortunately cracked windshields happen much too often in Colorado. State Farm selected
Caliber Auto Glass
to do the replacements. Very pleased. For my Mustang their mobile van came to my house to do the replacement. OEM Ford windshield. Very professional and knowledgeable technician did the work. Afterwards did the calibration of the camera system with a short drive.
