The cars are actually pretty close in lap time, and before anyone says oh well the ZR1 was driven by an engineer, those engineers have hundreds if not thousands of laps of seat time in those Corvettes, who had WAY more seat time than Dirk had with the GTD prior to his run, they're racing drivers who basically live at the track. So the drivers were pretty evenly matched.

The ZR1 and ZR1X beat the GTD by 2-3 seconds, that's close enough where Ford could take it back if they get some more practice in, and make some further improvements to the car. This is getting interesting and I'm all here for it.

this is the kind of thing i like to see. it gives me hope that Ford will not just abandon the Mustang like they did every other non-truck/SUV

Twin Tubo that motor like the GT500 Code Red.

The answer already exists.

The 800HP GTD always seemed like bait to me.

The ZR1X has 1250 horsepower .... the GTD has 815.
a co-worker of mine was mentioning this too. the ZR1X is only about 200lbs heavier than the GTD but has 435hp more with AWD and only managed a 3 second faster time. either the ZR1X was not pushed as hard as it could go, or its performance is remarkably disappointing

It was not that good in corners. The long stretches is why it got that lap time.

Misha Charoudin had a good video on the breakdown of the ZR1s lap. He noted lots of traction issues and bad lines. He also said a lot of speeds in the corners was low.

The first one was pretty wet, it doesn't count, IMO.
I agree and also disagree. It was indeed wet before the lap. But it was not wet enough to cancel the try since it dried up more than enough to do it without excuses.

Other part is, and even Micha said this, that Chevy could shabe 10 seconds of the lap because of the conservative engineer as the driver.

Yes, I've just watched that vid. He knows his stuff and reckons there's another 10 seconds in the ZR1.
And he considers it a better bet than the ZR1X.

I think this is fantastic!
The pony car wars are back and no matter who holds top spot, it benefits us enthusiasts!
Bring it on!!!

Hopefully Dodge/Chrysler/Stellantis or whatever they are called these days joins in.

Maybe the good old days of muscle cars are back?

Fingers crossed.

Ford's CEO should focus on all the recalls they have instead of a lap time for their halo car.
Correct. This kind of thing is partly why I will never own another GM product...never ever. Had too many with issues.
