Just bought a Mustang but dealer can’t release it

So I just bought a new Mustang and when I went to grab the keys, I was told by the dealer it can’t be released to me due to a fuel line recall. The part for the fix “is on back order” and unclear how long this will take.

Affected vehicles: 360, built between 2/2/24 - 2/9/24

In some of the affected vehicles, the low-pressure fuel supply line may be cut or damaged. This damage can result in liquid fuel leakage in the engine compartment. A damaged fuel supply line can result in liquid fuel leakage in the engine compartment. Liquid fuel and/or vapor that accumulates near a sufficiently hot surface may ignite, resulting in an under-hood fire and increasing the risk of injury. If the leak progresses, it can result in a partial or complete loss of fuel flow to the high-pressure fuel pump. A complete loss of fuel flow can cause a loss of motive power, which can increase the risk of a crash.

I'm assuming we're talking about the Ecoboost you listed in your profile. It's super shady that they didn't bother to tell you about a recall that was announced in March. Personally, I think it's unethical to sell something that you know you can't deliver, unless it was disclosed ahead of time.

Totally agree and why - in part - I’m frustrated. They sold me a car that wasn’t ready to be sold. They told me after everything was signed . I was literally walking to the car….

but im solution focused. Just wondering what options you guys think I have

only 2 real options
1. wait for the recall to be done
2. get a different vehicle

the dealer can face real serious fines of over 30k if they give you the vehicle with the recall still open, not to mention what trouble they would get into with Ford or the state. if they lie to Ford about doing the recall, they will still get in trouble for even trying that, plus the technician could be put on probation or even lose their Ford certifications entirely.

Not that you need me to tell you this, but It really comes down to how much you want that particular Mustang and how reasonable your dealer is. Clearly they are either incompetent or deceitful.

First I would start with seeing if they have a similar car you would be happy with and proposing a swap. Or see if they can do a dealer trade for a similar car.

Second, If you're able to wait, I would discuss with the sales manager something like they make the first payment if the car is going to sit that long. I would be VERY unhappy with making a payment on a car they are refusing to deliver because of a situation they clearly knew (or should have known) about before hand.

Finally, you could always push the issue of voiding the sale due to inability to deliver. In all reality they "sold" something with full knowledge that they can't deliver. Until you take delivery the sale is not complete.

Personally I would take the path of telling them either you find a replacement car in X days or cancel the deal and refund any deposits/payments you made. I would not want to give my business to a dealer that operates like this.

Under no circumstances would I take delivery till the recall is completed.

I would ask the dealer what the "in service" date of this car is. The clock could already be running on your warranty. Not a big deal if it's going to take a few days to get the parts, but could be a factor if it will be several weeks or more. I purchased my Mustang on 9/1 but wasn't able to take delivery until the following week, but my in service date is 9/1/23.

Warranty start date - important.
Days of interest paid on loan for vehicle you can't drive - important, too.

I'd be super #@$% pissed because they should have KNOWN it could not be delivered. Why they allowed you to pay for it and get all the monies traded around before telling you this is unacceptable.

Another good point. OP will likely be loosing "value" of warranty coverage due to this.

Great news everyone-the dealer got a part from another dealer and the recall was resolved. Took possession of the Mustang and am now an official owner!
