Hey everyone! It looks like it's been a few years since we've been active on this forum, so for those of you who aren't familiar with Mishimoto, I'd like to start off with a quick introduction.

Based in Delaware since 2005, we design and sell a wide array of performance aftermarket parts for everything from trucks to hot hatches to, of course, Mustangs. Most of our staff are car enthusiasts in one way or another and we like to bring that attitude with us to work - which is why we like to make posts like these, to share our engineering process with other enthusiasts, get feedback, and stay involved with the folks we're making products for. My name is Josh and I've recently taken over writing articles for our Engineering Blog.

Anyway, let's talk about our new catch can.

From the start, we wanted our catch can to be both effective and easy to service. We incorporated our existing Mishimoto V2 Compact 2-Port Baffled Catch Can, a tried-and-true design that uses a 50-micron bronze filter and internal air diverter to improve oil separation. We designed our new kit to be a direct fit for the 2024+ Mustang 5.0L V8 with a two-piece bracket for quick servicing.

After test-fitting some prototypes we sent the catch can out for a 1,400+ mile road test. Since the Coyote engines are known to produce excessive blow-by, we were expecting our catch can to collect an ample amount, but we were surprised at just how much. After the 1,493.6 mile road test with a total lifetime mileage of only 6,558 miles, we measured 15mL of blow-by collected.

If you want to read more about our catch can's design and road test, check out the blog I wrote about it.

But we also want to hear from you. Is there anything you liked or would've changed about our design? If you're currently running this catch can, how's your experience been? Let's hear it.

-Josh

Hey there Josh, could you explain why a catch can would be beneficial or necessary when there's lots of cars that don't run one? Not discounting anything, just curious what's the point from the perspective of the manufacturer.

Looks like this would only need 1 catch can for both intakes correct?
And finally is this for sale yet? And price predictions if not?

Hey @Interstellar - Great questions!

Most modern cars use some form of OEM air-oil separator system to minimize the amount of oil and fuel vapors that reach the intake, but often they're not as effective as we'd like due to cost and maintenance restrictions. By installing a dedicated catch can, you're going to collect more blow-by and have an easier time servicing it, which ultimately is going to protect the longevity of your engine. We have an older article about blow-by and catch cans that dives deeper into all of this if you'd like to check it out.

Yes, one catch can is all you need as it draws vacuum from the manifold, not the air intake tubes.

And last but not least - our catch can is currently on pre-sale.

Hope this answers your questions!

-Josh

Drain plug or petcock would be helpful.

UPR two oil catch can take care of both sides of the 5.0 Mustang while you only have it on one side! Care to tell me the differences between UPR and Mishimoto?

Had my first Older GT for 10 years regular oil changes ,premium gas and a bottle of Techron every 4k miles kept it like new drove it to 180k miles with no real maintenance issues besides battery ,starter and alternator issues

talked with a Ford engineer about this subject at Ford Nats….he said if tracking car get one, if not save your money.

You are adding extra maintenance and complexity to your engine with no real benefit.

Don`t get to carried away on mustang7g with people here telling/showing you how much oil they found in the can. That oil gets cleaned off with port injection anyways drink it if it really bothers you ..might grow that hair back on your head …who knows ??? 😉😉😉

It also significantly reduces your total octane when there’s a bunch of oil in the combustion chamber. Don’t forget that.

He’s being dumb catch cans serve a major purpose if you track/drag or drive the car hard. The primary reason is oil in the combustion chamber even a little bit is really bad for octane. It’ll lower it enough to where you can have knock issues which is why ford have a factory catch can to gt500 owners. And why they recommend them to boss 302 owners. It’s not a snake oil product but it’s really down to the owners use. Also port injection does and will wash off the oil on the valves but once again that’s not the problem. Also coyotes have had oil/ pcv issues since 2011 just based on how ford designed it on these engines. It’s not the end of the world but you won’t hurt the car in anyway

@Mishimoto Is this driver side or passenger side on the 2024? I'd want something that is easy to drain & or clean. How is your catch can serviced-cleaned? Are you able to show how where it mounts in the engine bay?

Hey @REV745DH24 - In modern engines, the crankcase ventilation is separated into two systems; the CCV side and the PCV side. The two sides are under vacuum at different RPM and load ranges. We test both sides and determine if both need a catch can, or if one side needs it and the other doesn't. In this case, we determined only the PCV side required one, and the CCV side didn't product enough blow-by to need a catch can.

We offer a 1/8" NPT drain plug on the bottom of the can and an available drain kit with a petcock as an add-on!

Hey @Darkness24 - The catch can for the 5.0 is on the passenger side for the 2024 model. Servicing is easy, there's two bolts you need to remove on the bracket and after that you unscrew the reservoir. You can clean everything using soap and water. To see photos of where it mounts in the engine bay, check out our product page by clicking here.
