Until someone cracks the ECU, whipple tune will be what everyone is on
This is not true! There are standalones that are and will be used. I think even some are trying piggybacks for a tuning solution.

But most Whipples will be using the Whipple tune as everyone knows.

I would be very curious to see where this is being offered. I'd imagine these standalone tunes are tunes sent specifically to vendors or other third parties that Whipple is partnered with. For the majority of the market, I'd imagine that this cannot be offered since it would break CARB legality.

My mistake as I must have deleted the ECU part.
A standalone ECU is only going to be offered if you buy the standalone ECU, install it and have it tuned by a turned that knows the standalone and vehicle well. IE custom and expensive.

Not something you will buy off the shelf most of the time.

Gotcha. I have not heard of this; is there a news link to it or something about it? I know Ford is releasing the Gen 4 coyote with a tuned version, but from what I can tell; it's essentially a Gen 3 coyote, just more expensive.

Most of us are not in California so CARB doesn’t have any meaning.

other than CARBeurator.

It doesn't matter though. Whipple isn't a custom tuner. Unless they've changed business models, the tune that you get in Florida will be the same tune you get in California or any other CARB state. Whether that tune changes with LTH or other mods you can put in the calibration request, i do not know. But I would find it odd for them to send out different tunes for different areas of the country. It would mean they have multiple tunes that they have tested.

That must be why they call it 49 state legal… so no CARB.

From what I can tell in correspondence with whipple through support. It should be 50 state legal soon-ish (cope maybe?), they’re still testing. Same thing still stands, if they were to offer a carb legal tune vs a non carb legal tune, then that’s a totally different story.

Lth (or simply even shorties) aren’t the only emissions equipment not permitted to be modified. The intake also applies, hence the emission filters (carbon traps - i guess it depends which direction determines trap v filter but anyhow) in the intake tract. Mod the intake (supercharge) and gotta get reevaluated / get an exemption the same as modding anything post head pre cat.

Are there any examples of an S650 running an aftermarket ECU (fueltech? Holley? Motec?)

Can you even run the 10R80 without a Ford ECU?

You can't run it on a standalone, not even a piggy back, and keep all the other systems in place.

The systems in these cars are so intertwined that when my car had the wrong tune on it we couldn't turn it off or shift it out of park.

Mr Northern Goat,
That's a great question. Call Whipple direct. Ask to speak to "Lincoln" he'll answer ever question you may have.

There's only 1 whipple tune for the 2024's though, right? Or does the Stage 2 kit have a non-CARB tune?
it seems like there are at least 6 tunes
- Whipple stage 1 GT
- Ford Performance stage 1 GT
- Whipple stage 2 GT
- Whipple stage 1 DH
- Ford Performance stage 1 DH
- Whipple stage 2 DH

all of them are 49-state legal and do not have CARB certifications

Stupid question, but would catted headers void warranty? I'm curious just curious bc my dealer said it wouldn't if they installed them. But I don't trust them that much 😂.

Get it in writing signed off from your dealer/service manager. Simple as that.

I don’t see how they can really, they’re external.

like trying to change cams or do some head work….ok fine, void engine warranty (you’re tinkering inside the engine.
