If you're that far North where cold weather is an issue (-22F or -30C) , then why wouldn't you opt for 0W30? The 5W20 just creates a thinner viscosity at temp. This could give you issues such as poor fuel economy, premature engine wear, and overheating issues if you run your car hard. It just puts you at risk. There are no rewards for a daily or weekend car to run it.
Actually it improves fuel economy.
Premature wear is a myth.

Who's driving a Mustang when it's 22 below?
I will cop to -2F
I was a bunch younger, and had a bike and my MGT with sticky, low profile tires. I came out, started up from taking the wife to dinner to a howling gale of wind with -2F temps. That sucked.

I got in the car and it was like being in a refrigerator. Heat to forever to get warm. When it finally did get warm-ish, I clutched into first and let out with just a touch of gas to an instant rear spin. I tried 3 more times to take off and had similar results. Now regretting that motorsport clutch, I eased out the clutch ever so slowly with no throttle and managed to get going without spinning. I figured this was a good time to just put some heat in the tires around the parking lot. well, heat being relative. I did a lap, tested my traction with some hard stops and some take offs with throttle and after getting some acceptable results headed home.

That's not quite what it says.

Your vehicle operates on regular unleaded gasoline with a minimum pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87.

For best overall vehicle and engine performance, premium fuel with an octane rating of 91 or higher is recommended. The performance gained by using premium fuel is most noticeable in hot weather as well as other conditions, for example when towing a trailer. See Towing a Trailer (page 271).

The car will run on 87. But you are leaving horsepower on the table.
This!

93 Octane since new. Dont skip on the better gas just to save $3-4 bucks.
Where you get premium for only $3-$4 more a tank? that's what it should cost but it's more like $15 a tank. Around my area is it at least +$1.00/gal more than 87. Also last time I checked octane booster was zero savings over premium even if you bought bulk. It's a damn racket.

The dyno charts were helpful, but I would like to have seen a 91 octane as well. I still feel that a tune specifically for higher octane would yield more. Is it true that Ford quotes HP/Q at 93 octane?

What do they have in MI?

Edit a quick search show 93 in MI. And I would suspect they would want to put out the highest number for bragging rights.

Didn't a couple companies do dyno videos of 91 vs 87 or was that only VMP with the Whipple installed?
Where I live Chevron 94 is the best fuel to run. As I put a Whipple on my DH I talked to the people at whipple. Who recommended Boostine and only Boostine. So I put in one can every time I fill up and my baby goes like a scolded cat.

93 all the time every time.

Regular = $3.09
Premium = $3.89

to each there own, but you buy a $50K+ car that has ~480HP and you skim on fuel?
I run the fuel recommended in the manual. My van is an ecoboost so I run 93 when towing and 87 the rest of the time. Same for my jeep. We'll See on the stang when it finally shows up. I will no doubt run 93 on the track but probably not on long road trips.

probably 91 octane

here's a previous model

https://www.sae.org/standards/content/cpfd2_18musgt91/

also the ford website fine print says:

Horsepower and torque ratings based on premium fuel per SAE J1349® standard. Your results may vary.

OEMs use specific fuel when testing. My experience really comes from emissions testing with Ford so I carry that thought process over to HP ratings. They don’t get their fuel from a local pump. The fuel is ordered to the specs they determine. Octane / Cetane / Ethanol or no ethanol / etc….

My own experience with my 2020 S550 is that going from 91-93 was worth 5 rwhp. My car had the FR Power Kit and it made 439 rwhp with 91 and 444rwhp with 93 octane. Which I had to blend, as we can't get 93 octane here in Cali. I added 3.5 gallons of VP racing 101 Street blaze fuel

I had the Ford Racing Tune in my 19 GT. See dyno runs below. I still believe that Ford or anybody tunes specifically for 93 octane that it would be more, albeit maybe not much, than stock tune with 93 octane. What i look for is the torque increases below 4K rpm for spirited daily driving.

$3.29 for BP 93 Octane. These prices will go lower when a certain someone allows drilling again. :please:
Where do you live to get that price, a refinery?
