Mystery has been solved and i was way off kinda.

It is connected on my euro car, to a ride height sensor and the magneride damper loom. It's probably related to the pothole mitigation feature, as a sudden increase in ride height on one corner will trigger the mitigation.

I have attached pics of the connector, with the wires going forward into the wheel well and the sensor in the well.
I have also attached a pic of the combined particulate filter and cat (which is tiny ...) they have pipes attached to them which route to that same connector location.

I was lifting the car via the spare scissor jack so wasn't going to ferret around under there too much.
I recalled the manual saying use a trolly jack for changing a wheel but i couldn't find a nice trolly jack point!

It is slightly odd / concerning that my engine mount is bright orange compared to the cream on the op's car
