Supercharger and HPDE Track Days

I do not see a thread on this issue, so I am linking one from the Mustang6G forums. Apparently, some folks are having success with the last generation and supercharging, without overheating.

E.g., a Whipple at 9 psi and some other modifications:

"Never saw CHT's above 215... air temp was in the 70's, very high speed track, car was being pushed 80% or so (still needs driver mod...)"

It's funny how some guys say they run a supercharger on the track with no issues and then you have guys overheating the stock PP2 cars....

Yeah, I think that was the guy who said it was fine with the Procharger when he was working his way up from novice to intermediate, but when he became advanced he had issues with overheating.

I wonder if he would have had those issues without the Procharger driving at the same pace?

There is an exponential difference between "pushing 80% or so" and going 90%. Even more going to 100%. Yes, you can add FI and do HPDE. Just be ready to look at your gauges a lot and cool down frequently.

I road raced a Roush 427R with a RoushCharger (Eaton M90) supercharger, with a 9# pulley all over the Midwest for 12 years in NASA. The only time I had an overheating issue was in 2012, when we found the electric water pump was failing.

A lot of camber there - you can see it in the picture!

I don't have fist hand experience with a FP Stage 1 Whipple in a road course/track setting yet. If time allows over the next year (maybe later this summer) I may hit VIR to see how my FP Stage 1 Whippled GT PP does (Luckily, I have a free invite to VIR).

Although not a huge advantage the PP has an oil cooler which certainly will help to some extent.

There has to be a way to manage temps on a supercharged S-650. It's not like anyone is going to be in an actual race most if not all will be doing it for fun. Given that, if heat becomes a concern we all have the ability to let our cars cool down before proceeding.

I may swap out the standard heat exchanger for a HD one Whipple offers. May even upgrade to dual pumps and whipple fans time will tell.

I mentioned the following in another post to some extent. Many GT500 CFTP owners track their vehicles for fun. And yes, some have experienced overheating issues and others little to no issues. A lot of the overheating issues have to do with high ambient temps.

Let's be realistic here none of our cars are built to withstand long extended hard runs regardless of where that may (N/A or F/I). None of the GT's, Dark Horses or even GT500's are true race cars. They're sold as an intended to be used on the street 99.9% of the time.

Anyone who intends to track their Whippled S-650 a lot should right out of the gate opt for the max Whipple offers in cooling upgrades HD heat exchanger, dual pumps, fans etc. It's not like anyone tracking their Whippled S-650 will be at WOT all the time not even close.

I certainly understand peoples concerns about overheating if they are serious about F/I and tracking their vehicle. On the other hand, at some point one must stop and think about home much serious track time do they really intend to do. If one is serious there are many other considerations that should be taking into account first all related to safety i.e., 4-point, 6-point harnesses +, roll bars (4-point, 6-point), helmet, gloves, all the way to HANS devices etc.

If one is merely looking to have a little occasional track fun don't overthink installing a Whipple SC and as stated above go max cooling upgrade right out of the gate. Honestly I wish I had done that. Adding $2000.00 (give or take) above the Whipple cost is really not a lot and that will get you max cooling. Worst case scenario is some cool down time. I imaging 99.9% of people on this forum who will track a vehicle will never come close to seeing 1% track time vs. 99% street time. More consideration should be aimed at the 99% usage.

Just my take on the subject for what it's worth.

Camber, front was -3*, rears -1.5*. Car was race dedicated and ran distilled water along with WaterWetter or Royal Purple Ice products in radiator.

Agree, my car was dyno'd at 435 rwhp, far cry from 800.
