Found this post on the S650 Mustang FB group, and figure I'd post it here:
Credit to Josh Stamper on FBSo I talked to some Ford Performance engineers and specifically a guy that does testing on gen 4 crate engines and he writes calibrations. He told me today that it’s not because of EPA but because when Ford wanted to start doing over the air updates they figured out if you have access to the pcm you can theoretically hack someone’s car and take control of it. He did say they are openly trying to figure out a way to let us start tuning them but without the security risk.
He also told me the dual throttle bodies was done because the upper management thought it looked cool. The first rendition of our intake manifolds were almost a copy of Ferraris. But it made less power than the standard Gen 3 manifold so they asked Ford if they can go back and they said no, make it better then. He said it’s not until the very high rpm does the gen 4 manifold beat the gen 3 but once tuning is available and we can spin them higher we will see better results.
