Mustang GTD Laps Nürburgring Faster Than Any Car from an American Brand
  • Mustang GTD fulfills sub-7-minute Nürburgring promise, completing a lap of the 12.9-mile, 73-turn “Green Hell” in 6:57.685
  • Mustang GTD is only the sixth stock, production sports car to complete an officially certified sub-seven-minute lap and the fifth fastest in the production sports car class according to the Nürburgring's records
  • The challenges the Mustang GTD team overcame to set a sub-seven-minute lap at the Nürburgring are featured in The Road to the Ring, a 13-minute documentary film airing now on Ford.com, YouTube, Facebook and other social media channels
DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 10, 2024 – Germany’s iconic Nürburgring Nordschleife is the gold-standard for sports car development. And the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD is the first car from an American brand to complete a lap in under seven minutes.

Driven by Multimatic Motorsports driver Dirk Müller, the 815-horsepower Mustang GTD lapped the circuit nicknamed “The Green Hell” in an officially certified 6:57:685. It’s the fifth fastest time by a stock production sports car according to the Nürburgring’s official records and Mustang GTD is only the sixth vehicle in that class to break the seven-minute barrier.

The time delivers on the goal laid out by CEO Jim Farley at the Mustang GTD’s debut in August 2023.

“The team behind Mustang GTD took what we’ve learned from decades on the track and engineered a Mustang that can compete with the world’s best supercars,” said Jim Farley, Ford President and CEO. “We’re proud to be the first American automaker with a car that can lap the Nürburgring in under seven minutes, but we aren’t satisfied. We know there’s much more time to find with Mustang GTD. We’ll be back.”

Mustang GTD’s Nürburgring success is due to the work of a small, dedicated team of engineers and designers who worked tirelessly over the course of two years to turn the Mustang GT3 race car into the first-ever Mustang supercar. Ford documented their efforts in the run up to the timed Nürburgring run in The Road To The Ring, a 13-minute documentary that covers the challenge, drama, and excitement of developing Mustang GTD.

The documentary, which is available on Ford.com, the Ford YouTube channel, and Facebook is a behind-the-scenes look at the testing of Mustang GTD, from iconic American tracks like Sebring, through to development sessions at the Nürburgring. It features Farley, Muller, Multimatic Chief Technical Officer Larry Holt, Mustang GTD Chief Program Engineer Greg Goodall, and Mustang GTD Design Manager Anthony Colard, as well as other members of the Ford and Multimatic team.

Mustang GTD represents the apex of Mustang performance and benefits from lessons learned by the Ford Performance Motorsports and Multimatic Motorsports Mustang GT3 program, in particular around aerodynamics and setup for tracks such as the Nürburgring. However, Mustang GTD isn’t subject to the rules and regulations of GT3 racing, which prohibit much of the technology that allow a sub-seven-minute Nürburgring lap.

That includes carbon-ceramic brakes, active aerodynamics, a supercharger, and semi-active suspension. A carbon-fiber body is familiar from GT3 racing, and while the Mustang GTD that completed the sub-seven-minute lap was entirely stock, it did include motorsports-derived safety gear mandated by the Nürburgring. That includes a competition seat with a five-point harness and a roll cage.

As I said earlier in a now removed thread: not that impressive. The base is not a $42k GT but the $300k GTD. Multimatic took that car to the ring and apparently prepared the car for two years. They wanted to beat the GT3 but they were no where near the time set by the much cheaper Porsche.

The car is cool and good looking but it's neither cheap nor attainable if you're not some influencer or so. It has nothing in common with a regular GT except maybe that both cars are slow compared to today's competition and the only thing they have going for them is a lovely V8 and maybe style (very individual, I like the looks).

Not really that impressive compared to the time and cost that went into the project. Which will probably get beat by the ZR1 that will be cheaper to buy.

I disagree that it's not that impressive. Does it blow me away, no. Porsche has been refining and improving the GT cars for years. I think Ford did well. They did beat the regular GT 3, not the RS.

per Motor Authority

"The redesigned 2023 Porsche 911 GT3 RS managed to lap the full 12.9 miles of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in a time of 6:49.328, making it around 10 seconds faster than the 911 GT3 and seven seconds faster than the predecessor model."

The curb weight for the GT3 RS is ~3268lb. GTD is considerably more.

Lol, they did not reached their goal and it's more expensive than the Porsche. On top of that the car is exclusive and not obtainable.

Slow and expensive compared to the competition.

honestly an amazing achievement. The mustang, which 10 years ago was seen as nothing more than a straight line one trick pony with the 200+mph GT500, now is going toe to toe with one of the most iconic track cars in history. Top that off with the GTD managing a 6:57 in the wet on Fords first official outing, this car has a lot of potential left in it. Especially compared to the Porsche team thats been doing this stuff for over 2 decades at the ring. cant wait to see what a dry lap gives us

First is still first
I would still applaud their tactics since Porsche and other race cars are smaller and Mustang with its size and weight is still an accomplishment. Now will Mustang build a two seater car with a much lighter weight do better than Porsche? Who knows! For a fair treatment, and without pride, Mustang in its size and weight is still an accomplishment period under the seven minute lap!
We all know better not to shove Mustang as slow vehicle! They are doing pretty good! Bravo!

under seven minutes: sixth vehicle in that class, fifth fastest time, break the seven-minute barrier = 6:57.

I think what most of you all are forgetting is that Porsche has been racing and making just sports cars since Porsche left VW in I believe the 40's. So what's that 80 plus years of just sports performance vehicles. So what Ford did in just a few years I do believe is impressive. And for all that are going to jump on me saying Ford didn't make the GTD, Ford also didn't make the GT 40 Shelby did. But what crossed that finish line was a Ford badge, it doesn't matter who helped built it a Ford is still a Ford.

Obviously they can get a lot better time when the course isn't wet, but they wanted to release the time to be the first American brand under 7 minutes.

Wouldn't be surprised if it gets under 6:50 in better conditions.

Edit: Reading the press release also confirms that they can get a lot better time with better conditions and they're going back.
