Apparently, lithium batteries are not recommended on cars with smart charging and a BMS system... our S650's. The smart charge strategy for an AGM battery will not sufficiently charge a lithium battery.

in my TT I can select between LA, AGM, LiPo batteries since each have a different charging strategy.

i have not seen an option in the car to change charging strategies

please advise

is this Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) or Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4)? because i would highly advise against putting a Li-Ion battery in a car. LiFePO4 is much safer and is more durable over charge cycles, even if it's not quite as energy dense. but even then, it would be best for racing purposes only, as the charging system in these cars is designed for the factory AGM ones

Paying $$$ for an Optima Yellow Top a few cars ago taught me to just buy OEM replacement or even a Duralast Gold if you're struggling. Optima lasted 8 months before it was dead. Replaced it with Duralast Gold which lasted at least 3 years and I only don't know past that because I traded the car.

i wonder what profile they are using in the bms or if they have it disabled?

Ford probably has a GTD-specific profile that includes their use. Using the examples above, there'd be an additional line to support a lithium. And might have more parameters elsewhere to support the GTD charging system in racing environments.

For people with other types of Mustangs who primarily track or go to the strip, lithiums could make sense. But for Daily Drivers, they can present issues in how BMS interprets, charges or interacts with them.

sure enough, this is true! part number SR3Z-10655-A - $1665 retail cost, plus the hassle of dealing with what i've heard is one of the most insufferable groups of people at Ford. or you can pay $1050 to get it right from Antigravity Batteries for a 60Ah version. GTD still has the same BMS as the standard Mustang too (except the DH SC for some reason????). the BCM likely has a different profile for monitoring the BMS then

Even less if you catch it on sale...

Just spoke with tech support @ antigravity... they said that their batteries work well with standard AGM profiles (I was asking about use in '24 S650)... Also said S550's been using them for years with no issues (not sure how relevant that is).

... so, maybe no change to GTD charging system then?

knowing this, if they weren't so expensive, i might consider getting one. at least Antigravity is transparent about the chemistry unlike Kelltrac, and it's LiFePO4, so it's a very stable chemistry - the same chemistry that lots of EVs are switching to, even - and has more output than the Kelltrac ones too with either 40Ah or 60Ah with 1500 and 1800 CCA respectively

I know for fact that the solar controller on my TT has three profiles for charging: LA, AGM, LiPo so I doubt the battery will recharge properly on a stock Mustang charging system. But hey, it’s your money. Please report back in time
