This point makes me think that there is an approaching separation of interest that needs to be done by Ford.The base mustang has to start in the low $30Ks so it's a bit restricted.
It may make sense here to take the Mustang further up-market and invest more money into it, which will inflate prices even further but hopefully reach a justification point. Meanwhile something less expensive meeting the price point you just mentioned could be introduced, evolving the D2C platform while keeping overall prices low. Maybe if the Ecoboost and the GT split into different directions? But then how would that affect the overall fuel economy across the entire model?
I can see now why there were murmurs of Mustang becoming its own brand. That would make it easier to solve this problem, potentially easing the struggle of platform - since this could potentially open it up to multiple platforms - while also shifting the global fuel economy from a single model across multiple. I think this car might be limited by the laws of both physics and the NHTSA...
