There is a congestion charge in London inside certain areas, but this is only in the very central part of London. You pay it if you enter the area.

NYC was trying to do that also which would reduce traffic. People who own cars and live in the city most be nuts. Because between car insurance and gas it doesn't make sense.

Well it is double for one of those and very much not for the other! You said double or triple, not remotely triple and maybe double if you choose your locations.

There are places in the UK cheaper than what we are paying - not far of California prices at around $6 per US gallon.

Completely agree it was a bigger difference before, but shows we have been less affected by the war / not war.

Well, this is what they are going to do in my country as well. Now we pay vehicle tax based on the weight of the car. In 2 years or so they will tax the car based on how much you drive.

Pence per mile is being mooted here but fuel tax does the same thing.

My son lives in Tokyo and you can't have a car there without confirmed off street parking. Public transport is so good there really isn't any need however.

Well, this is what they are going to do in my country as well. Now we pay vehicle tax based on the weight of the car. In 2 years or so they will tax the car based on how much you drive.

in north Carolina and south Carolina you pay vehicle property tax every according to your vehicle value. And it drops as the vehicle gets older. But you have to watch these crooks because they make up vehicle value to be more than you paid. They claim to use 2 different appraiser like Kelley blue book. I bought a new car in south Carolina and it was a base model. I paid 31,000.00 the county assessor said that I paid 43,000.00 he said I have the paperwork in front of me. So I went down to the Assessor office of course he wasn't there. I had the bill of sale and showed what her colleague said what I paid for it. She corrected it in the computer so it dropped by 400.00. Most people don't argue and just pay what they say which is ridiculous for people with older cars and people who but used vehicle. One person bought a Toyota highlander from his daughter it was a 2005 with tons of miles. He paid more property tax than I did on my new vehicle. I told him your vehicle isn't worth much and they are ripping you off. He couldn't care less about it and even if you take your vehicle off the road and turn in your plate you still have to pay some property tax on it. Anything you have from a small trailer and boat and trailer you have to pay property tax on it. Then the home property tax is hilarious because they want to know if you have done any upgrades to your house inside and out. Even painting they want know about it .
I forgot about this lady in south CCarolina but a new Volkswagen she got a low price deal on the vehicle it was the last one that had been sitting there. She paid way below sticker the county assessor said the book value is 15,000.00 more and that's what you are going to pay. She went to court with a lawyer and she lost because the judge said even if you got the car for free. You have to pay what it's worth not what you paid for it. So if that car got stolen the insurance company isn't going to give what the car is worth. They are going to cover what you owe and depreciation of the vehicle.

It is interesting to note that our electricity prices in France (where I live part of the time) have hardly changed since the war/ not war because most of the generation is nuclear, wind and solar so not dependent on fossil fuels from unstable countries. Why on earth would anybody increase dependence on fossil fuels and their volatile prices when you don't need to be?

The American left is dead set against nuclear power generation, which makes building them very difficult. We did just finish one here in Georgia where I live, but it was the first such plant built in The United States in 30 years. Georgia does get 25% of its power from nuclear, and one older plant was this month certified to continue into the 2050s.

It can always be worse. Here if you want to buy a Mustang GT, you have to pay sales tax on the GT which is 1.5x the price of the Mustang. So you buy 2.5 Mustangs to get 1.
