First oil change after break in

I saw a few similar threads about this, but I didn't want to hijack someone else's.

I have a 2026 Mustang GT convertible 6 speed manual with the performance pack. It is currently at 1300km (800 miles) and I just booked an appointment with the dealership for the initial post-break in oil change at 1000 miles / 1600km, in 2 weeks from now.

As a new Mustang owner I would like your opinions on if I am doing this right. Asking ChatGPT is an option but I trust other real owners' opinion a lot more.

I have an extended 10 year / 120,000km warranty with the vehicle, so I have to stick to OEM as much as possible for that. The Ford's owner's manual says to use 9.5 - 10 quart of Motorcraft® SAE 5W-30 Motor Oil - CXO-5W30-LFS6 (Full Synthetic) - WSS-M2C971-A1 and a Motorcraft FL-500S oil filter. I put this exact information in the comment section when I booked the appointment. The dealership's scheduling software automatically added "Premium Oil Conditioner". I feel this is another one of those upsell items by the dealership. The owner's manually also specifically states that any third party additives are unnecessary and could potentially jeopardize factory warranty. So I opted out of that and only booked the oil and the filter change.

Am I doing this right in you guys' opinion? Correct oil and part numbers? Should I add the "Premium Oil Conditioner" back in or is it unnecessary?
As an FYI, I am planning on changing the oil once a year or after every 5000km / 3000 miles. So I feel the need for an oil conditioner is unnecessary.

You are correct no oil additive is needed. I also switched to Motorcraft full synthetic 5w30 at my first oil change. With that I'm going with 5,000 mile intervals. I would presume a Ford dealer will use the correct Motorcraft oil filter.

Trust your gut, don't let them do anything unnecessary. Do research and read the reviews of the place. Make sure they know what they're doing.

People with boosted cars typically use 5W50.

You're referencing the owners manual, which is great. That's the standard in maintaining the car.

First oil change early at 1000 mi / 1600 km is also good. A few reasons why:

- There's machining material left from the assembly process

- Break-in and wear material has accumulated from weathering things in

- The analysis of my factory fill oil found it to be weak in some aspects. While not an emergency, it highlighted some of the unique aspects of a new engine

Full Synthetic for any modern engine is the way to go, the best long-term play.

The Oil Life Monitor is based on a 12-month, 10,000 mile standard. If you change the oil and park the car for 12 months, the OLM will expire at one year. Also if you attain that mileage.

The OLM also takes into account engine temps, RPM, drive time and other factors. The harder the car is driven, the quicker the OLM will decrement. Those who track will change the oil after one weekend.

If you're driving about 5000 km / 3000 mi a year, once a year oil changes are fine.

As to the conditioner, you've already selected a fine operating oil. There's no need for a conditioner. Attached is a reference from the 7G Mustang Owners Manual.

- Follow the maintenance schedule
- Use OEM or quality aftermarket parts
- Record the maintenance performed
- Enjoy, but don't abuse the mechanicals

PCM - Powertrain Control Module. The computer running the engine and transmission
IPC - Instrument Panel Cluster
GWM - GateWay Module. It acts like an electronic switch, connecting the car's internal networks
HS-CAN - High-Speed Connected Area Network. There are several internal to the car

If the car is unmodified and you are not operating under any unique conditions, 5W-30 will be fine.

If the engine has been modified, you're headed to the strip or track, that might change. The supplier of the mod will sometimes direct a different oil weight. Whipple'd cars for example will specify 5W-50. Some who routinely track their cars or regularly push higher temps might make a change.

But for the majority of us, 5W-30 is fine.

My oil pressure varies from as high as pegging the needle when the engine has just started to as low as 15 psi / 1.03 bar at idle on a hot day with the A/C on. I've been doing oil analysis and all results have been nominal.

Find a well-known, full synthetic in a 5W-30 and consistently use that. It's OK to change brands over the course of the engine. But I'm not a fan of regularly switching. It takes two-to-three oil changes for what's in the pan to match what's in the jug.

Got it. Thanks so much everyone. I will stick with the Motorcraft 5W30 and Motorcraft oil filter then as per owner's manual and keep opting out of the bogus "premium oil conditioner".

Regarding the conditioner, I have one car mechanic friend telling me that if the additive is from a brand called BG that it could be good to add on high performance engines, and that BG guarantees warranty if the engine were to fail thanks to their additives.
That being said, he is more of an old cars guy, so the theory probably doesn't hold up in my brand new 2026.

Adding BG isn't going to make your oil any better. It's just high pressure high profit sales crap
