BMW M3 (E90) vs S650

Very nice!! I thought hard about the M2 ... maybe it was the $$$ difference. Every time I priced the M2 - I started to bump up to the M3/M4 & Porsche price range. I would have to get a second job - and at my age, having a tough time with one.

One of the reasons I went with the M2 is because of the $$$ difference. My S650 came in right at $60K, I bought the M2, granted there is no options on it for $63K. Remember the M2 comes with almost all the goodies standard anyway. Also I lease my vehicles and the payment on the M2 was actually $100 per month cheaper. My car is almost 2 yrs. old now and the buyout is right at $50K, I can sell it for $61K. The S650 Mustang isn't holding its value very well.

To finish up this post - for those who may not know, the e9x was the only BMW 3 series to ever have a v8. The majority had a straight 6 or 4. The v8 (s65) was very high tech for its time.

I am still learning about the coyote - but is seems to me that it has most/al of the features that the s65 had, maybe without the individual throttle bodies, knock sensing spark plugs, ... but I'm not exactly sure. I also think that the coyote is more durable, but the question would be why? Are the engine tolerances greater (so the bearing wear would be lower???)?

Does anyone have a link to similar info for a s650 gen coyote?

The S65 engine compares more to the 5.2 Voodoo than the 5.0L Coyote. The achilles hill for the S65 is the Rod Bearings. Although it affects less than 2% of the car manufactured. The aftermarket pretty much has cured that with better bearings but it costs $2500 to change them. Right at about 60k miles a lot of owners switched out the rod bearings. I sold my car because of Covid, my wife lost her job. I wish I never sold her. I am loving my M2.

How do you figure you could sell your M2 2 years later for what you bought it for new?
When I bought my 24 Dark Horse premium new I got it for $63k which was about the same as the base M2 was. I don't think resale would be too far off between the 2 at this point.

I was lucky I bought it before all the tarriffs hit. Since I bought it the base price of a G87 M2 was $64K, its now at $70K and BMW doesn't have these laying around the dealership. If there is one on a lot its due to someone not taking deliverly. My car only has 10.4K miles on her. Carvana offered me $57K. My buyout is 49.8K

I assumed we were talking about a lighter car. I just looked up the M2 weight, Google says 3814. I had no idea.

I was lucky I bought it before all the tarriffs hit. Since I bought it the base price of a G87 M2 was $64K, its now at $70K and BMW doesn't have these laying around the dealership. If there is one on a lot its due to someone not taking deliverly. My car only has 10.4K miles on her. Carvana offered me $57K. My buyout is 49.8K

I think I’d be in a similar situation with my DH since I bought way under msrp and before 25 major price increase.
Funny, I was able to negotiate $3k off msrp M2 a year ago. I don’t think they are that hot of a car that you can’t get a deal.

Obviously the deal you get is going to be dependent on the area you live. In Los Angeles I got $1200 off of MSRP and an additional $750 off due to being a US Army Veteran. I was able to secure $2-3Koff of an M2 that was in stock but not to order, but it was also in the midwest, I either had to drive the car back or arrange transportation. Negating any savings I got. I got quoted $1100 on a lease for a GT, not a DH. My lease payment on the M2 is just over $1k with only the $1950 I got off the car. I came in with no money and if I sell now even for $59K, I still put money in my pocket. Im not selling.

If you get the CF roof and buckets its in the low 3740lb range. The 3814 number is a base car with an auto. I will say this...it doesn't feel like a 3800lb car.

Whats a bummer with the M3/4 you get Forged wheels saving 20lbs of rotational mass and they get a Li battery saving an additional 40lbs. The M2 doesn't get this to keep the performance behind the base M4.

I have a BMW 3-series too and it would absolutely smoke my GT in a street race.

It often comes down to who can get off the line without spinning tires, and all the German "competitors" with AWD and launch control have a massive advantage on an unprepped street surface.

An Audi RS3 and any BMW with the B58 engine hits 60 in the 3's. Even a VW golf R or Audi S3 have a traction advantage and will simply grip and go.

With boost, however, even if any of those cars jump the GT by a car length at the start, the boosted GT's 40-120 mph is so violent that it will pass the others like they're standing still. And a new GT with a whipple costs about $20K less than a than a new M340i.

I had an AWD with launch and "only" 300hp. Launch was vicious and it would run my GT very close if not beat it to 100kmh. After that it would be eating dust.
But, who can realistically use launch on public roads? It's noisy and attracts the wrong kind of attention, and will cancel launch if held too long.
I'd really like car reviews to also do acceleration from idle, it'd really be interesting to see what's quick and what's not so quick under those conditions.
