If you're a gear head, you know congress has mandated remote shutdown. The mandated date is 2027 models. The idea (at least what they're telling people) is to give police the ability to shut down a drunk driver or perhaps an escaping villain of some sort. Or....

Let's say the fed wants to stop people driving during the next virus pandemic, and they decide to make sure you don't drive, wham! If this doesn't sound Orwellian, I don't know what is?! Does this remind you of mask mandates? It does me, but about three decimal points to the right!

Just an FYI to anyone that doesn't see this as overreach, or with the potential to be abused, consider this.

A few months ago, every single Porsche made after 2013 was remotely shut down via satellite in Russia, leaving them bricked on the side of the road or in parking spots.

Well... from what I've read, they weren't "shut down", they simply didn't start. And dealers and mechanics figured out how to work around it.

I'd like to see the actual law that the OP references, since what I've found isn't even remotely close to the Internet doomsayers' interpretation. From KBB.COM:

The law’s text is relatively short. It tells the agency to require a “passive system” that:
  • “monitors a driver’s performance to identify impairment of a driver”
    • “passively detects a blood alcohol level equal to and exceeding .08 blood alcohol content”
    • Or, “detects impairment and prevents or limits vehicle operation”

And the rules haven't even been written yet, much less requiring implementation by model year 2027.

Well... from what I've read, that man wasn't "killed", he was simply put to rest. And doctors and surgeons figured out how to work around it

Brother, the point is that they were all remotely shut down via satellite.

Another reason to be thankful that we don't live in Russia.

Does this imply a ‘secondary’ modem?

What, you think something like this is exclusive to Russia. You don't think its possible for this to happen in the US?

Its the same anti theft system, regardless of country.
Here's the KBB story if anyone is interested.

What happened in Russia was likely due to Porsche pulling out of the country in 2022 after the invasion of Ukraine, and refusing to support their dealer network since. No one seems to know why the satellite communication failed, or will admit to it.

Is it possible to happen in the US? Of course. I think the question on the mind of everyone is, can/will the government be able to do it here, and I suspect that the answer - for now anyway - is no. Congress won't pass that kind of law.

Now, I believe that GM already has that kind of functionality via On-Star, to remotely disable a stolen car, but that's a GM thing, not a government mandate or law. And any knowledgeable thief immediately tears out the On-Star module (or unplugs the antenna) to remove the option. Or so I've heard.

I will truly never understand how people like you are so willful, and worse yet, smug about just giving away bits and pieces of personal privacy and freedom at a time.

Its the same thing I heard years ago. "hurr durr, I'm not breaking the law so who cares what the big companies and government see in my search history, etc etc"

We are where we are because of people like you.

Unless you go 100% off the grid personal privacy today is a myth. Even then your past is still available to anyone who wants it. And freedom, seriously? There are things happening today that could effect our freedom far more than a remote shutdown mandate.

And “people like you”. Now that’s getting a little too close to being political so I’ll stop here.

You can simplify this even further. Take a gas tax for instance. Once in place, though promised to be only 5 cents per gallon, can easily climb to 50 cents like it is here in California. Open the door and Big Brother loves to step in.
I’m just sayin’.

How about people like you...
People that don't want websites tracking every single think I click on?

People that don't want the ability for someone to remotely shut my car off?

Wow. Ya really got me.
