Wait a minute Alfalfa. There’s a girl with the white Mustang we all liked. How did she get in the He Man’s Woman Hater Club?

And there lies the disconnect. 50k a year is not enough to live on in "nearly every city in the USA". At least not enough for home ownership and supporting a family.

Now I have no idea what the cost of living is near those line workers jobs. Maybe 50k gets you a lot more. But here in Phoenix you need to make 67k a year to afford an average priced one bedroom appartment and make a the average car payment.
So, to clarify, that $50K is a starting salary, and I do believe that in the places that Ford has factories, yes, one could get by. That's why there are no factories in AZ (AFAIK) that makes cars.

Remember, this thread started with the CEO of Ford's comments, and has digressed as these more interesting threads seem to do.

I used to be a manager and I've worked with younger folks, and it is amazing the difference in attitudes, expectations and work ethics between say Boomers, Millennials, Gen Z and Y and whatever other letters there are now. It's easy to blame the kids, but I blame us, (most of us) the parents, the ones that told them that they could be anything, that they were #1 for just showing up, and that everything will be given to them if they just wait. And this ticky-tok stuff doesn't help, but that's another thread.

I agree with the earlier comments about how we need more technicians, tradespeople, etc. I was watching This Old House (I think) and they were filming at a job fair or talking to employers who had hired people from places that helped Vets learn new marketable skills, and this one guy said, and it always stuck with me: I can train anyone to do a job. I need these people to show up to work.

That's not education, that's simple work ethic, values, and those things are taught or learned by example from the parents.

I had this conversation with my boss. He's made some questionable hiring choices for my site (seperate from the main site) and his reasoning is that "we need bodies."

I don't need bodies. I need competent A&P mechanics that are willing to learn and work.

The other issue is that I work in General Aviation. The pay is less than what you can make at the airlines. The majority of the new A&Ps know this, and they all chase those $$$.

He's not talking about BS retail jobs. Its corporate America. My wife was one of 2500 applicants for the job she got hired for. They only reached out to the top 50 applicants. Let that sink in for a minute. Step out of your bubble and stop throwing stones.

As for the trades, yes there is a trade shortage. But not everone wants to be a blue collar worker with aspirations of starting their own HVAC business. Lol
Oh i thought ppl wanted to make money. If sit in office and be a worker bee for the least amount the company can get away with paying ya is all ya want in life. So be it.

My first 'job' in 1970 (Army private) paid $90/month. When I retired at 62, I was making what in some areas would be starting pay today. My retirement pay (I didn't start my Social Security until age 66) was more than my work income and I owned two homes free and clear. It is not a matter of getting a degree or being an entrepreneur. It was not wasting money, being an asset in the work place, and taking advantage of the opportunities available.

I went into the Army for the GI Bill benefits and spent three years in college only to find that I was not suited for office work. What worked for me is my upbringing with an emphasis on self reliance and earning my own way. Giving respect to those who deserve it, and not wasting my time on be stupid (that was a hard go for me. Failed many times).

We need parents to be involved with raising their children, and find a way to bring back the generations family support. Trim back the humanities and politics in schools and more on STEM type programs. I think our college system needs a major overhaul. They are becoming almost like theme parks with education becoming secondary.
