I got the opportunity to talk to Mr. Farley himself a few weeks ago. My guess is it will be Legend, which is not an engine, but a vehicle. He also said expect the new Halo Stang (whether it be Cobra or Boss - I told him the people want Cobra haha) to be around 890 hp, supercharged, and lighter. Don’t expect a manual either.

He also mentioned they have rights back for the GT500 name which I found to be interesting..

He said as of now with emissions and performance demands, it’s damn near impossible.
I hope they say screw the performance aspects, focus on the fun and driver engagements.

But I didn’t know emissions played a role

I'll take that with a grain of salt as I doubt that the car will be significantly lighter... We also expected some 8xxhp from a supercharger. Unfortunately it wouldn't make any difference if the car cannot deliver the performance. The biggest flaw of the GT500 was spinning tires - AWD would be a game changer but since noone is talking about it I doubt we'll see it in the upcoming GT500 successor...

If they still have the GT500 rights they should go with that name. It's well known and there is already a cobra with a coyote engine that actually is a Cobra unlike the Mustang. However, if they actually have the naming rights and will call it another GT500 then I expect the new facelifted Dark horse to be called 'BOSS' - the rumors would fit in...

Can’t remember if we discussed AWD or not, but the GTD is already hitting 0-60 in 2.8 sec at 4,400 lbs. A better ECU will help tremendously for spinning the tires if they’re gonna stick with RWD.

AWD is only of value if your interests lie in straight lines. Having had one, even a good set up feels a bit dulled and less responsive. There are one or two exceptions.
I love RWD in a powerful car, it's been 7 years since I had it in a non powerful car. It's great to be back.
As someone said, the GTD is sub 3 secs to 60, how fast do you need on the road?
And, a good AWD will still beat it across an intersection.

Yeah, I heavily doubt that. The GTD will do 2.8 seconds like the Tesla Plaid did 1.x seconds... If you cannot reproduce the 0-60 or 100 km/h on any other day it's not 2.8 seconds. Look at Porsche. The 911 Turbo S does its 2.5 seconds basically any given day. Now that's a verifiable number. 2.8 seconds by an American magazine that did it once and no other test has even come up with anything close to it is not really believable. On average we are talking about 3.5 seconds with the GTD, which is in line with the gt500 and other rear wheel cars. 0-60 isn't their focus but accelerating faster always helps.

Anyhow, it's an automatic so... Rear wheel drive is more fun than AWD, I agree but I would take an AWD manual over a RWD automatic.

Isn't the point being missed here? The GTD is not a drag strip demon, it's a road/track day marvel.
Nearly every tester comments on how driver friendly it is as a daily driver.
As for it's acceleration, even 3.5 secs to 60 is 7.66 metres per second squared, or 47 metres from stopped to 60 mph which is beyond the reaction time of 90% of ordinary drivers on public streets if things turn pear shaped. It's all getting a bit silly, like the bike world has been for years.

It has been silly for years and it's only getting worse.

There is however, a difference between what the drive is capable of and what the car is actually capable to pull off.

Almost zero people are able to put down a sub 3 seconds 0-60 time and as many people are able to drive the car around the Nürburgring in sub 7 minutes so it's all about bragging rights. Absolutely irrelevant as most buyers will be happy with their car but still, there is a market for these kind of things.

Yes, and then there's launch control. It's great, a fantastic boot up the backside when you let off the brake. But then try doing that in a cop infested place like NZ cities, you'll have your car impounded instantly for "unnecessary display of acceleration". Because there's no way a car launches itself accidentally.
But, with a conventional torque converter auto like the Mustang, you can be reasonably stealthy as long as you don't light up the tyres. Or use track mode exhaust.

At this point I don't care what the name is. The only thing that could tempt me away from the current Track Pack GT500 is a car with better low-end traction (via real traction control or whatever), lower weight, slightly shorter gearing, better weight distribution and an equivalently good/better exhaust note. In other words, a car that's not quite as geared towards large fast tracks and has more short track/road bias. It also needs to be purchasable...
