So,

I took my 1000 mile GT in for service, and of course they didn't have a Transmission specialist working today.

When I took delivery almost a month ago, I had zero issues with the clutch / transmission, and about a week into owning it a small "vibration" or "chatter" was developing.

Fast forward 2 more weeks, and now it's pretty much doing it all the time.

Basically, if I'm on throttle and past say 3000 RPMs, shift into second, there is a vibrating / chattering / grinding noise from the time I depress the clutch, give it gas, until the clutch grabs again in 2nd gear.

Love the car, but lots of warranty items so far:

1) New Complete Stitched Console Cover (it was coming apart - leather / vinyl had a rip in it from the factory)...
2) When PDI'd, they forgot to add the PP Air Directors or whatever they are for added downforce
3) Dealer Ordering an entirely new driver's rear window as it was installed as defective from the factory lol...

and now ... this sneaky transmission / chatter noise is up next on the list.

Would you mind taking a listen to the following video - and seeing if you can help me identify what it might be or if it is indeed normal or if it's something that needs to be addressed? Specifically at the 7 second mark in the video... The phone doesn't capture the vibration or the sound accurately. It's about 3-4x louder (more pronounced) in person...

The best way I can describe it is that it sounds like you took a giant bag of Lay's Potato Chips and just crunched the entire bag for 1/2 a second

Appreciate it in advance...

Do you feel anything in the linkage or pedal when this is happening?

Some - nothing crazy - it almost feels like flywheel chattering if that makes sense (although I can't imagine that is it)? What's odd is that if I am super gentle with it - and just drive it like I'm 53 instead of 23, smooth as butter and doesn't make a sound.

Found another video of exactly what mine is doing:

Check out the 3:38 Mark: This is exactly what it's doing lol

That's definitely a grinding gear or synchro in his video. I couldn't tell what it was in your video. Yours sounded more like a vibration.

Early MT82 transmissions did have a lot of problems. However, one thing he's gets wrong or doesn't realize, is that they were revised due to these problems for the S550 and forward. If memory serves there was an issue with the linkage binding under heavy load, that would cause grinding or lockout going into a gear under high RPM.

That said, they've never had a stellar reputation even after that, and the only manual mustang I would, and have bought, is one with a Tremec.

I'm sorry your are having this problem. First order of business would be to take it in and have them check the fluid. Obviously that is not normal and should be fixed under warranty what ever the cause is. Keep us updated. ☹

Thanks my friend.

Luckily my son is a certified Ford tech at a Ford dealership.

Hes taking it in while I’m gone this week to do my 1000 mile oil change and install the Ford performance Oil Air Separators and will have the right guys look at it at the dealership.

I honestly feel like it’s clutch related as I have learned how to easily replicate the issue on demand just by modulating the throttle and clutch together…

I’ve driven manuals my whole life and never experienced what is happening so I’m confident it’s mechanical of some sort and will eventually get sorted.

luckily it’s not a daily driver- I travel out of state for work basically every week Monday - Thursday and home Friday so it’s not like I rely on it as my sole mode of transportation- and it’s also a 3rd car so I appreciate everything and I’m sure we will get it sorted in due time!

My son was having intermittent lockout issues mostly going into 1st and 2nd in the 2022 GT manual. I drove it, but am about 4" shorter so had to move the seat up. I had zero problems and couldn't replicate the problem. He had to move the seat back to accommodate his stature. He hasn't had a problem since. He chocked it up to an extra little bump forward in the drivers seat (and maybe his shoes - work vs. pleasure) after I had adjusted it for me.

I had a 2022 Ecoboost with the MT82 which was a bit hard to shift when cold (mostly N-1st, 1st-2nd, 2nd-3rd lockout) and seemed to take a bit longer to break in, but after 8k miles it was fine even in the cold. The 2024 GT manual has been smooth sailing since day 1, now has 11k miles. I chock that up to experience with the S550 and S650 platform over the last several years.

Not saying it's you or the transmission, which actually could have an issue (even though it's intermittent) but we have found posture is important. The clutch really seems to need to be fully pushed in. Also, the MT82's from what I have read are more for medium plus, not hard use, that's where the Tremec shines (watch Misha around the Nurburgring in a DH with his in cabin cameras). Too bad Ford doesn't have better manual transmission options especially in PP cars.

If it were me, if I wanted a PP car I'd only have considered the Automatic. But since I am a manual only person for now (at 62, I wonder how much long I have), if I wanted something for harder use, I'd have gone Dark Horse with the Tremec. As much as like the look of the Handling Pack DH, it isn't for what I wanted, really hard almost not daily use.

My son and I found that these MT82's are fine for hitting the mountainous twisties in northern AZ, which is what we're seeking complete with full size spares so we don't get stranded, not track use. Thus non-PP, nor DH/HP cars for us for now.

EDIT/UPDATE: Some have put in Barton or MGW shifters (doesn't necessarily have to be short throw) and have reported some improvement. But you should wait and make sure that it's truly not your Getrag.

Thanks for the related experience- I should have clarified - it shifts buttery smooth, quickly, and has no issues engaging.

It’s just - and I can fully replicate it at will now - if the clutch and gas pedals are modulated in a certain way during shifting there is a weird vibration / completely different sound to the engine almost like a chattering…

still goes into gear and hits hard lol

just weird!

Just FYI, the appropriate seating position with manual shifts is to be able to hold the clutch pedal hard on the floor but still have a bend in the knee.
Grandmas duly told how to suck eggs.
