By the way, s/s can be turned off in the computer system and has been since day one.

Unfortunately on newer Volvo's if you make any changes using third party software when Volvo next connect to the car it blocks access and has to be reset.

To be honest the current simple S/S system on the Mustang is rapidly falling out of favour now with either ISG's or full hybrid systems so the whole wear thing becomes a complete non-issue.

That was an interesting link - we have smart signalling systems for traffic lights in the UK in some cases but this looks like the next step

That is the whole point though which some on here fail to grasp. Things move on, designs get refined and developed, we are not still in 1970!

Same word, different application different result however both are time tested. Just cause you call it a hybrid or the technology is applied differently doesn’t mean the results aren’t relative to application.

Timing chains used to be only a few links long o


You can't compare the two. Theres a solid three or four feet of difference. Old timing chains were truly lifetime because they were so short.

1970's timing chains:

You had low revving V8's, we had inline, generally undersquare, 4's and 6's, which had much longer chains.
The only car I've owned that had cam chain issues was a Lada Niva, also known as the Fiatski, that needed chain adjustment every 3 months or so. Most issues I've heard of in Euro V6's and 8's seem to be cam timing units and chain guides.
At least we agree ASS is crap.

--> I have literally seen it first hand. Any car with long timing chains that's daily driven every day in stop and go traffic, in cities, or in suburbs and developments with more stoplights than backroads. Merecedes and Audi were by far the most common, you'd see the chains stretched between 100-200K at the pins. The metal isn't physically stretching, but the hole at the pins wears out just enough. Its a personal anecdote, but its one I'll take to my grave.

You don't seriously think a chain shouldn't wear after that sort of mileage? I'd get 20 - 30,000kms out of a bikes drive chain because I had an auto oiler. People that relied on lubing chains themselves sometimes chopped a chain out in 10 -15000kms.
Chains and sprockets of all types are consumable items. But, they're better than belts. At least you get a warning they're worn.
